With all the other gearing options, I cannot see any reason why you would want to increase the overall length of the drivetrain by another 8" to add one of those....especially when you can get a Stak.

4 speed atlas basically has a klune on it already...

Klune/Atlas = $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Stak is a lot cheaper.

Get the Stak 3 speed case and go as high as you can in the diffs. This will be an issue with the portals.
Not really, the Portal-Tek's can be specified with a gear ratio from 3 :1 to 7.33:1

Man, I LOVE the 4 speed Cruiser case.

mine came with a 3 speed ... I think ... it's been a while since it was replaced :flipoff2:

Now where is that paperwork ... it's a 73 .... I think ... hmmm .... It does not matter I dont have the box anymore!!

I meant 4 speed tranny.

Anyway, I have not been following the Portal Tech stuff, but 3:1 final or is that the diffs plus reduction? There has to be some reduction in the portals IF they are really portals and not just high-center axles.

Anyway, 3:1 to 7:1 sounds to me like your choices in the 3rd member befor a 2:1 portal reduction. Clarify that then decide what you want for a final drive ratio. Then lets come up with a plan :)

That's the nice thing :D, it's the final ratio! :bounce:

I have a quote with a 2.47 Ring and pinion and a 4.94 final :bounce2:

I know of no 1.5 ish ring gear ratios so I just don't know how they can do a 3:1 final.

Anyway, back to the original question: Which case.

Lets say you stick with the SM420. I know Medusa will hate this, but to keep it simple, lets round down/up to the closest number here for ratios.

SM420-7:1 x Portal Tech-5:1 x STAK 3:1/5.5:1

That gives you 105:1 and 192:1 for your crawl ratios.

Toyota 4 speed-4:1 x Portal Tech-5:1 x STAK

60:1 and 110:1

I like the SM420 options there the best. 105:1 is a great final drive for crawling and use of 2nd gear to get the wheels spinning.

192:1 is sick, sick, sick and will be a fun ratio to have when you want to play with it.

I vote to keep the SM420 and get the STAK in the current ratio they are offering.

Yes, yes it is.

Those are basically my gear ratios right there. I am VERY happy that I have the ability to lose that 200:1 ratio tho..

And if I keep the Ranger OD (83:1 & 152:1) I also could cruise HW at a decent clip without over-reving the v8 ... road trip!

Anyway, if 192:1 is so sick ;) and loosing it is good

then why not go to a 4.5:1 (75:1, 95:1, 135:1 & 172:1) or 4:1 (66:1, 84:1, 120:1 & 153:1) final ratio?
:censor: I'll need ear plugs for all the gear noise and a map and guide to all those levers :flipoff2:

200:1 is entertaining, don't get me wrong.

But I would hate to have that be my low range ratio...

What revs are you looking for on the highway?

ah, I understand.

Well working it backwards, 55 and 70, with 35'' rubber, OD and 4.88:1 final would be between 2 and 2.5 K rpm, with 4.5:1 it would be 1.8 to 2.3k, hmmm

I've never driven an FJ with a big V8, so is that high?

No, 4.88 should be perfect...

Just out of curiousity how many of you guys talking about the stak box have actually installed one? They are freakin huge compared to a Atlas or an Orion. HAs anyone dealt with tranny tunnel issues or are we just settling for a bunch of crap hanging below the frame rails.?

Well aware that the STAK box is larger than an Atlas or an Orion....buddy is installing one in his buggy...

I had to modify the floor/tunnel of my Red truck when I installed my Atlas, so that I had flat bottom, because I was sick of the stock Land Cruiser case hanging low...and I am running a three inch body lift.....

Other than an Orion, there is no getting around this bud....no matter Atlas or STAK....

Good luck!
