Are mods really necessary for dirt roads?

Leaving everything completely alone, no cranking, no shuffling, nothing, a 285/65R18 will fit without issue.

Perfect. Thanks.

You're going to need an RTT

But seriously, for dirt roads, I would say this as a minimum.

Would it basically address the weak front diff issue to install the arb, even if finances, etc., led one to skip the compressor/locking feature until later?

Yes, the ARB replaces the entire carrier assembly with all of the internals. I have not read of one diff failure with an ARB installed.

^ there has been one front R&P failure with the ARB. But the evidence clearing weighs in favor of the ARB's more rigid ring gear carrier...a no brainer mod IMO.

i put 285x65x18 with Nitto Trail Grapplers on my LX470 in NORMAL AHC setting for suspension and ONLY rubbed slightly on steep trails or extreme terrain. No changes to TB or anything....

So how hard would it be for me to put this in myself / what is liklihood i'd mess it up? I see you can buy the item for about $900. Not bad.

My tires are new - and have always brought me where i need to go, so i'll keep them until they where out/ give me trouble. But I'll try other tires next time around.

So other than the front diff, I think I'm ok for now.

Thanks for the advice!

Let's be honest with ourselves, for dirt roads that don't require any mods on a 100, there are a plethora of cars and trucks that are adequate, not all of them four wheel drive.

can you do this? :) gear install

actually, you can have Zuk do the hard part, you can remove and replace the diff, but you should have someone supervising if you arent skilled.

Yahh, ya know, you are right ..... I'm not going to do all that. So, looking for another plan - I see Zuk's site but it is a bit confusing, is he someone that I would send it to???
What is a reasonable charge for install?

Yes. You would have to ask him about cost but friends that have gone through him said he was pretty reasonable.

How did we go from "Are mods really necessary..." to an ARB install by the middle of page two?

Excellent question!!! The likeliness of ever needing a locker to drive dirt roads is about as much as me traveling to the moon....

If you spend a little time here looking into the weak front dif issue, the numbers only show about what 4% of the owners have had an issue. And we make up how many of the total 100 owners out there?

But, if you have the cash and want to spend it... go for it.

Plug: Zuk was cheaper than two local quotes that I got, including the shipping. and his work is impeccable.

Back on topic, you definitely do not need a locker to roam dirt roads. if you are worried about capability, you shouldn't. if you are worried about getting stranded from a blown diff (or anything else). then get some basic recovery gear and go wheeling with friends that can tug you out.

It's not about the need for a locker, I never use mine. It's about not getting stuck because you broke on an easy section of trail. The front diff has a problem, mine broke in a very mild obstacle. Lots of them have broken in icy parking lots etc. There is a definite design flaw.

The failures reported on this site represent only a small part of the total number.

If you want to roll the dice, like I did, be prepared to do the field fix.

...or could just replace the differential ring and pinion with aftermarket and not put a ARB inside if money is an issue....it saves you a few hundred dollars to go just with gears....rather than buying ARB carrier, all the insides, air pump and line....and then install of everything. It does add up....
