Are early and late FJ40 fenders interchangable?

I have 77 FJ40 project truck for which I'm desperately trying to find used/inexpensive replacement for the left/driver side fender(for two months now):crybaby:. Can someone tell me if fenders from earlier FJ40 models (1972, specifically) are interchangeble with my 77? What problems am I to encounter with fitment or mount holes placement? Thank a lot, Dennis.

The battery tray and coil mounts may be different but not a big deal.

How about even older? I have a '67 FJ45LV and late '70's or early '80's fenders. OK or not?

fenders

I'm in the process of replacing my rusted and dented front fenders on my '72 with some good used '65ish fenders. When I placed them on the frame for mock up there was about a 1/4" space between the lower rear fender and the running board. I'm hoping that by opening up the mounting holes it will move everything back and they will fit properly. I also noticed the bolt holes for both side aprons mount to the fender at a 90 degree angle vs. parallel to the fenders. Luckily the aprons came with the old fenders -- I'll just need to cut out holes in the aprons for the side marker lights.

The mounts for the turn signals are different. I put a 78 fender on my 74 and had to cut the mount off the under side and weld it to the new fender. It would probably work but I wanted them to match.

the battery mount, mounts off the frame, not the fender.

I'd much rather have fenders from the mid 60's then the early 80's, I think the metal was better as it held up better, rust wise.

I'm seeing the same 1/4" difference between early and late fenders with early being shorter than late. I don't know the cut off year but I believe I'm comparing '64 fenders (early) and about '69 or '70 (what I'm calling late) fenders. The '69 or '70 fenders have the two apron holes running fore and aft whereas the early '64 fender has them going side to side. (If that makes sense. The apron brace is different.) I'm not sure if the apron hole difference means the fenders are shorter/longer but I brought it up because I noticed it. Also, '64 fenders do not have slots in the lower two holes that mount to the frame. I slotted mine to make them easier to take on and off while fitting.

I'm also enlarging the holes in the fender to make up most of the difference in the length. Its just enough to drive you crazy trying to get them to line up. I have an early fender on one side and a later fender on the other which is making the issue worst as well. I may repair the other early fender I have so that I have a better matched set.

How 'bout 72-75 fenders?

Thanks to everyone who repplied so far. I see that late sixties fenders will require some fitment and aprons. What about 71-75 fenders? How much truble will those cause to fit my 77 Fj40?

Major difference you will see is the sheet metal shroud for the steering box on the early column shift models (including 1972). The fender will contact the later model steering box unless you drill out the spot welds and remove the shroud. Other than that it should fit.
