Watch out for tule fog! :hillbilly:

I hate winters here. Every year is like that movie The Mist.

So I think I'm going to take my rear drive shaft out and take the truck for a spin. How safe/unsafe is it to practically turn the truck into a front wheel drive and drive it say 55-65 mph?

If it does turn out to be the third I think I'll just save up to completely rebuild the rear end with an ARB and New Gears. What gears would you use? I'm currently on 305 (33's) and after I life it plan to go 35-37. I'm thinking 4.88's would be enough. If I use 4.88's in the rear I have to do it in the front as well right with the CDL and all?

Whoa there pardner.

Let's just keep this on track till you've isolated the issue please...

Do you have a CDL switch?
Unless the CDL is locked I would not run with only one shaft
You need to lock the center diff, once you do that you can drive around all you want to with one shaft either front or rear
If you dont lock out the CD you will burn up your VC

The CDL has nothing to with what gears you run
Yes you will have to run the same gears in the front and rear diffs though

Like CJF said you need to ease up there and narrow down the problem

Yeah I know I should slow down. I'm gonna pull the rear shaft out tomorrow morning and test it out. I have a lock so I'm good there. I also found out some great news last night. I can get my trucked worked on for free. All I gotta do is pay for or get my own parts. So anyway tomorrow. Pulling out the rear "propeller shaft".

Put a Magnaflow on mine, sounds sweet and between the Maganflow and the KN, performance improved. How loud, I don't know. 99% of the time I run with the AC on.

I need to find this hookup!

Mine is a Local CC with a auto tech program. You should call your closest school and see if they have one. I know growing up in Texas my high schools Ag Department had a similar program. According to my buddy the more extreme the job the more they love it. I guess usually they're changing oil and tranny fluid so an axle rebuild, gear swap, and some air lockers for my 80 should be a lot of fun for these college kids. Hell even if it isn't the third making all the noise I might just do that anyway.

I am now the proud owner of a front will drive FZJ80. I just got that rear shaft out gonna go for a test drive here in a minute. Wasn't that hard to do except for the last bolt on the back was a bitch to get out. for some reason the bolt holes became miss aligned so I had to put the ass end on jack stands and spin the tires till it pretty much fell off. Here we go I'll report back soon.

Ok so I just got back. only sounds I heard were wind exhaust and tires. So what's my next step. If I'm going to rebuild this thing I'm going to do it right. I guess ARB's and 4.88's are in my future. Time to spend some money, I guess the lift and bumpers are going to have to wait. Someone chime in and let me know what the next step should be. Mainly a shopping list.

Hope you got around $3000-3500 for gears and ARB's
Because that is what it is going to cost
What do you do with the Truck?
Does the type of off road you do really need ARB's front and rear?
I would personally re-gear and put and Aussie locker in the rear only and some good sliders and be done with it
Keep a little money for other things
Unless you are doing crazy rockcrawling all the time

Plus how much do you off road?
I would learn how to wheel the truck with just a rear locker
A front locker is great but it just means you can and will get even more stuck than with just a rear locker
Plus you have zero armor so whats the point of having lockers if your going to dent the crap out of your truck without armor
Baby steps

I just figured if I'm going to do it I'll do it all at once. I've been wondering about the Aussie locker. Is it like a limited slip or positrac?

No and aussie locker is an auto-locker that will automatically lock up
And this is just my opinion but I think an aussie locker in the rear compliments the AWD of an 80 well
Also they only cost like $300 and are really easy to put in

What is the point of putting in front and rear lockers when the rest of your rig is not really prepared to handle the knarly off road situations that F&R lockers can put you in
An 80 as you know is really big and it is pretty easy to dent it up real quick if your not protected
I have only found a couple of situations where I would have needed a front locker and even then I still managed to work my around it or through it
Like I said it all depends on how you plan on using your rig
You need to think about how much do you forsee yourself using both a front and rear locker during the coarse of say a year.
I would not over look at least rocker prorection as part of your plan
Fancy bumpers can come later

I think you need to do a little more research and reading before you go hog wild
This all just an opinion
What you choose to do is your choice

well I'll have it paid off in about 8 months then I plan to buy an old school mini for a daily driver. this will be a toy. I may not use it immediately but down the road I have plans for a 5 inch and possible 37's. My buddy got a tube bender and welder for christmas so we're going to build some sliders. The lockers may not come into play right away but they will eventually. As far as trails I'll be in the mountains mostly as they're close. I guess the ARB is good if the truck has to be driven on the road a lot. Maybe I will go with the Aussie. My buddy has a Detroit on his Jeep and it gets kinda hairy on the highway and he slides pretty badly on snowy roads. I had plans for the lift and stuff first but if i need to fix this that can come second. It's hard to prioritize the things I'd like to do. First though I need to drain, flush and refill the rear end gear oil to see if that helps. sounds like a long weekend project.

You cant compare how a jeep with a rear detroit handles to how an 80 handles with a rear auto locker
That is night and day

The jeep is significantly lighter than an 80 especially in the rear end and is not AWD

You will hardly ever notice an aussie in the rear of an 80 until you need it and the traction is there instantly

Plus you have not even paid it off yet and you want to dump $3000 + into it
That does not make any sense to me

This is only an opinion you do what you want

Yeah your right. I think I will go with the Aussie and save that $1500+ for a lift or bumper or something. I mean $300 for a locker's pretty awesome.
