I dd my 80 with the aussie in the rear and its like its not even there. There is absolutely no comparison between an aussie in an 80 and an auto locker in a heap. The heaps Ive been in that have a detroit or the like clunk like crazy and it feels like everything is falling apart if you goose it through a tight corner on dry pavement. Brutal.

Having similiar issues.

My 92LC makes a grinding noise that sounds more fan like and the center console, steering wheel, dashboard, front driver and passager seats shake/vibrate like crazy and it seems its coming from where the high and low, drive shifter is when I accelerate and traveling at high speeds(40-80mph). When deccelerating the sound goes away along with the shake/vibration.
Could it be my diffs as well but in the front or central?
I might have to do the same tests to locate the culperate...
Thank you,
Jeremy

So I guess I need a Shopping list. I plan to add 4.88's and an Aussie locker in the back. I don't have much experience with Diff's but I have people willing to help that do. I need to get this fixed as soon as possible as this is also my DD and I don't wanna put too many miles on it in front wheel drive alone.

call Kurt at cruiser outfitters
He will get you set up
You will need gears for front and rear and install kits for both as well plus the locker
He will tell anything else you might need as well
Check the vendors section there are plenty of good vendors that can set you
Just Differentials is pretty good I heard as well

That's definatly a bad pinion bearing, if your keeping awd your going to love the aussie, good luck!

Hey guys. I've noticed since I've taken my rear drive shaft out that the truck turns better. Before when doing a u-turn or pulling into a parking space I'd have to give it a little gas and on a u turn the back tires would chirp sometimes. Is this normal behavior in the 80. Kurt was closed yesterday so I sent an email. I hope to hear back from him soon. ready to get this ball rolling.

Man, I'm really glad I stumbled across this thread. I have been wanting lockers too, and had ruled out lunchbox lockers because I'll be moving back to Utah in a year and heard they are no good in the snow. I think now I can save myself a grand and go with an Aussie. How do they affect tire wear? And are they the same part for front and rear? Is anyone running a front Aussie and a rear arb, or vice versa?

No. Might be easier to steer in 2wd, but your drivetrain should not be binding up normally in fulltime 4wd.

Sounds like your vc might be going south as well

What's a VC?

Aussie=lunchbox locker.

i have had a rear aussie for 3-4 months now i think and you'd never know it was back there.

front Aussie/rear ARB i think would still give some wierd steering characteristics as the locker engages/disengages.

front ARB/rear Aussie is a good setup, ive had it in a couple trucks.

Got it. Is there anyway to check that? I'll have to get this diff work done first then I'll check that out.

Hope you got my email back with the re-gear parts list, if not its here is the FAQ page we have to help you come up with a parts list:
Toyota Axle Re-Gear/Rebuild Information & Tech

I'm hoping this new FAQ page will help folks wade through the re-gear process, we'll update and add to it as it is needed, if something is missing/wrong/confusing, lets us know. Of course if you have any specific gearing or parts need questions don't hesitate to call/email.

Yeah I got it and looked up all the parts today. I'll be sending you an email soon to order pretty much exactly what's on that list. Except I'm gonna go timken front and rear. Thanks again.

Sweet, glad it was helpful! Let me know

Ok so on to the next step. I'll be ordering my gears and bearings and kits from Kurt (Thanks again). My problem is what gears to select. In the future. I plan to do a lot of upgrades including lift, bumpers, sliders, batteries, rack, tire carrier just to name a few. So what gears should I run? I had decided on 4.88's, but what if I plan to step up to 37's instead of 35's? So what's better 4.88's with likely 35's and maybe 37's or 5.29's with a possible upgrade to 37's? The 37's are a maybe as I don't want to have to do a lot of cutting to make them fit. Either way I'm stuck with the 33's I have until they're done. So if I ran the 5.29's how will they act with the 33's that I have? So many questions.

OK, So the time has come. The raise and overtime are finally starting to get me into the black to where I can start ordering parts. Before I do though I need some help. I had originally planned on running 4.88's and thought that maybe I would just go with a small lift and some 35's. However, the more I think about it the more I really wanna go big, I mean if you can why not do it? The lift is next on the list with the tires to come when I need new ones. So, my question is, how bad would it be to run 5.29's on my current 33's until I get the lift and tires done? I know it's going to make me run extremely high RPMs but the roads I take to work are all 55 mph and I'm fine going that slow. What are some of the other bad effects that would make this a bad idea? I only want to do this once so a future regear is almost out of the picture.
