Anyone see an issue? Split rims and 255/85s?

I do like the look of those rims, kind of like old school. I don't use them but, did know a guy who used them. He said, Got to be very careful with a split rim. Dosen't really happen offen, if you off road and bottom out or slam that wheel into something hard as a rock, they can pop causing that ring to go flying.

Ive never heard of it happening with the Toyota splits

splits

Never heard of that happening either. IMO..I'd take an extra spare before I'd go with splits...certainly they are heavier than the oem steelies.

So I have a set of 33x10.5x15s now... should I just stay with them? Would the 255x85x16 do better with load than the 15s would?

Depends more on the load rating of the tire than it's diameter. My BFG AT's are load range "C" as are my Super Swampers TSL's. Load range "E" is for really carrying around weight.

i run splits on my one truck, cause they are stock on that truck
i have a 36" set mounted on a set of stock splits.

yes, they are heavy bitches compared to aluminum. they are very strong rims. easy to change.

depends on the person, i wouldn't try and convince someone that didn't want splits to run them
but
i wouldn't discourage someone from running them either.

as for fuel mileage, it takes more power to turn them from a dead stop but the weight should make it easier once they get rolling ... you would think.

i never noticed a difference, the white one returns between 9L/100 to 10L/100 almost constantly. the red one is a bit harder on fuel but then it is just a 4 speed.

Sorry Brekenridge, I am overseas right now. I bought mine form Tirerack.com

Rob

I am thinking about buying splitrims and also bought original 16's.
I want to sell the aluminium (poser wheels :D my hj is not a porsche) and here is more info about changing the split rims:

http://www.4wdonline.com/Wheels/Split.html

If happy, re-inflate the tyre. I place the tyre away from the truck and with the split ring uppermost, start the pump.
[The potential danger is due to the fact that a tyre side-wall has an area of perhaps 7x20x3.14=440sq". At a tyre pressure of say 30psi, that is about 6 tons of force trying to tear the wheel apart. If the split rim is unseated, it will become a dangerous projectile.]

never an issue for me in that tire size or bigger. Ran them for 10 years plus. They are HEAVY and need to be split periodically or they will rust heavily. (in Sask winters anyways)

on a 255/85

and with a 9.00R16

Just came back from Germany:
7 rusted 7,5 x 16 split rims, two ok 6 mm tires and 5x 3 mm abused in 50k Afrika trip.
They have water inside so I have to split them :D edit>removed water by pumping them slowly to 2,5 bar, seems ok.
All are now 2,5 bar but these rings look dangerous with popping off storys in mind  one has a leak so that will be the test.
First buy an air grinder I suppose :princess: will be happy with me spending more than she can earn :hillbilly:
:princess: is loud  and clear :o :censor: NO WAY that I may store 11 huge wheels! :crybaby: lol I will bury them...
She wants the 32x11.50 r15 113R m+s lt back! and H8@205!
no problem honestly

I have to find a cage to swap them legally...maybe the massey ferguson dealer can help...

Got them on today, has to be balanced so first find a shop that can do that.
Nice look and exactly the same width as 205/80/16!
Took it out in mud today and got stuck in 2x2  Had to get out to lock the front (my 7 year old doughter telling me: I told you to lock them first...)

So splitting a tire in my backyard is quite good for a practice run
I managed to get the ring of without a problem, then spraycan oil the other side and jump on it: got it loose.
Cool, but this video is far better than words: http://youtu.be/xtfW2KvMjfo

Interesting thoughts. I moved mine around this weekend with the stock 28" ish tires and I thought I was lifting a 35" on Aluminum. Those wheels are very heavy. I know it has been said but I thought I would add to it.

I agree. I like the idea of running the tubes and being able to fix it along the way. You can easily carry a few tubes if necessary easier than a few tires. But then again the plug you also have to add so really it is just double the work I would guess.

I also like that they are much much stronger than cast aluminum. I actually cracked my Touareg wheel a few weeks back...very disappointed. Dent them and just beat them back out. Crack it and just weld it.

Lastly when I buy new tires I don't have to take them to the tire shop. But I don't have a balancer anyway so what is the extra 5 dollars I have to spend when I'm probably already paying 200 a tire.

I'm very torn as well. Fuel economy and available power is a big thing for me and though they are stock 99% of the miles at least for the first few years will be on the interstate and I will always have at least one full spare with me to change out. I think I will always hold onto the splits for days I want some nostalgia but I will likely go with some aluminum rims for its asphalt days.

I decided to go with a 16x6 70 series wheel set. Steel but much lighter. it just came down to the weight and the fact that patch kids nowadays are so good. I will be carrying a spare so how often will I blow two?

Cabbage?

This thread may be done, but I'll go ahead and tell about my split rim experiences. My HJ45 came with 5 stock split rims, I thought they were really cool and wanted to stay with them. I found it very difficult to find someone to balance them (cash only and I promised not to tell the name of the shop), but no one would touch them to mount tires. After maxing out the balance machine with over a pound of lead the wheels did not run any better. In the end I found some 15" spoke rims, not as cool, but lighter and not illegal. I carry 2 spares and that has always been enough.
I'm sure there were other issues with the rims not running well, but I was ready to drive over 40mph.

... and the fact that patch kids nowadays are so good...

Ha! For a second I thought you were asking how much I got the wheels for. I was entering that post on my phone so I am surprised that was the only issue with my text.

On a second note, Cabbage Patch Kids are coincidentally my favorite candy. I have never eaten Cabbage Patch Kits so I cannot compare.

Zom... There is nothing illegal about having split rims ... If somebody told you that... They are misinformed

If you needed that many weights... You had a bent rim(s) ... Any steel rim will take a ton of weights if they are bent

For several years I ran no weights..... Then I got equal tire ballancer in 4 tires to help reduce wear patterns that were showing after 20k miles

agreed, they are not illegal.
most shops won't work on them but i take them apart, repair or replace and then take the assembled wheel to the shop for balancing. never had an issue. there are more weights needed (so it seems) with these rims.

heavier rims, more weight to get rolling but more inertia to keep them rolling.

I am switching tires again,
Weight with tires:
aluminium....= 29.5 kg 32x11.50 r15 113R
original steel= 26 Kg. 205/80/16
Split rim......= 35.5 Kg. 205/?/16

Here is the damage to the aluminium:

And a dent on top: if you buy aluminum second hand go to a shop for alignment test...

Hi Jason, this is the weight with the tires, I have added the size above
The 205 is very small and I think it is nonsense if people think the weight drives differently (a few kilograms :meh:, were not dragracers)
Now I have gone from splitrim to aluminium and it is only the size of the tire that makes a difference in driving/speed@X rpm.
