I have been searching and the only 2 types are vacum and electronic cruise controls made by audiovox and rostra both run off a vss which the 60s do not have. Does anyone know of one that does not and runs off the tach. I was also thinking of having my dad build one.:hmm: But I would need something to start with so if anyone had one they were going to throw away sitting in the garage, I would pay for shipping. :bounce::bounce2:
Thanks and happy new years:cheers:

IIRC there's a VSS built into the speedo in the gauge cluster..... :hmm:
I'm interested to hear what others have to say on cruiser systems, it's a back burner mod I've been half thinking of for a long time.

Perhaps in a 62 cluster, but not in a 60 series cluster.

I'll see if I can find something to show, but I believe even back into the 40s there was a VSS signal available at the speedo...... or else I'm back on crack.

There are plenty of gadgets out there that rely on a magnet and a pickup to generate a pulse frequency and thus display whatever it is you are trying to gauge. I have on on a motorcycle and they are available on every street corner for bicycles. There must be something of this sort for cruise control.

The one that I ripped out of my 60 and threw away (it wasn't working) had magnets on the Drive Shaft and a sensor wired near by. You can probably engineer something similar or find a cruise control that comes with the sensors. A quick google found this manufacturer:

Magnetic Sensors Corporation, Quality Sensor Products Since 1983

It looks to connect directly to the speedo cable and generate the pulses. Perhaps you could adapt this to send the appropriate signal? Much better than the driveshaft version I had.

I've been using my factory Fj62 makeshift cruise control on the highway sometimes.............

Pull the "THROTTLE" lever while on the highway to the respective RPM's that I cruise at.

I know it can be dangerous in an emergency but it's only a quick hands reach away to disengage.

you can buy a VSS that will go inline on your speedo cable...that might be useful in your effort.

i think you are on crack because there is no such thing on the 60 and i think that if the 60 doent the 40 wouldnt that guy had something aftermarket

:meh:

EMISSION CONTROL SYSTEM - Air Injection (All System 3-27
INSPECTION OF SPEED SENSOR
1. JACK UP ONE REAR WHEEL OFF THE GROUND
2. RELEASE PARKING BRAKE
3. SET SHIFT LEVER INTO NEUTRAL
4. UNPLUG WIRING CONNECTOR FROM COMPUTER
The location of computer is on the left cowl.
5. CHECK ON-OFF CYCLES OF SPEED SENSOR
(a) Place (+) terminal of the ohmmeter on the wirina
Ohmmeter
connector terminal and (-) terminal on around.
(b) Turn the rear wheel slov&.
(c) Check that the ohmmeter needle deflects consistently.
CAUTION: The ohmmeter probe should be inserted from
the rear side of the connector.
If the ohmmeter needle does not deflect, check that the
speed sensor terminals at the back side of the speedometer
are properly connected. If the connection is OK, replace
the speedometer assembly.

Ok i lied found this in emissions fsm sorry

What are you referring to?

Rostra

I got a complete cruise control for my 60 from Rostra ( Rostra Precision Controls, Inc. ) and I ordered it through Brandon Distributing ( Brandon Distributing, Inc. ). The prices are below. The speed adapter bolts onto the speed gear output to give you a VSS and then allows the stock speedometer cable to be run on the bolted onto that to be driven. I have not installed it yet as I am waiting for warmer weather.

On my last trip, my leg cramped real bad. SO a cruiser control is in order.
Has anyone here considered pulling a cruiser control from another car? I know older volvo's are vacuum driven...

I have a vss that is designed for use with a toyota case when doing a chevy engine conversion. I have no use for it - $20 shipped and it is yours....

As part of my TPI 350 engine swap I am also installing the Z-28's Cruise(r) Control. It is one of the reasons that I'm using the OE harness. I've never seen the wiring for CC offered with the aftermarket harness'.

Rostra Electronic works well.

I've got the Rostra Electronic cruise similar to what Buoytech listed, and it works very well. The VSS connects in-line between the speedo cable and t/c, and has a simple wire connection. I just installed mine last October, but works as advertised and holds speed very constant. I'm running a Ramjet 350 crate motor and an H55F in my '85 FJ60.

If you go this route, you should also invest in the extra switch kit for a manual trans. This shuts down cruise when the clutch is pressed. The "standard" kit has a switch for brakes only. The literature is a little sketchy, but pretty straightforward if you take your time.
