Any idea on the donor vehicle for this brake booster and master cylinder?
The whole thing is nearly 20 inches long!

I read that power brakes became available in July 1970. My rig is March 1970.

Looks like an FJ40 unit.

A disk brake FJ40 unit. the non disk brake version had a smaller booster I believe, so 75-79 FJ40.

Okay!
Man that is a huge booster.
I guess it was adapted to my '70. The reservoirs are sitting at a slight angle like the whole thing was tilted in its original mounting - level in mine.
Are boosters rebuild able?

This has been an interesting process so far - should have the tub off the frame this weekend.
It is remarkably rust free.
But pretty hacked up by who knows how many previous owners....

yep my '77 set up looked like that. except it sat tight to the firewall. the firewall support in yours ran right through there, it was obviously cut out and that wacky brace welded in to the bottom of the booster.

the booster is supposedly rebuild able, but it can be a pain. finding a new one is near impossible though. if you can find a kit or a good used unit grab it.

the reservoirs should sit level. should be easy to fix.

The fire wall on early 40's has a three bolt pattern on it, you have to put an adapter on it to use a later model Toyota booster. This makes everything stick way out in the engine bay. I am wrestling how I will deal with this because It is going to interfere with my 3FE intake plenum. I think Jon cut out the section of the firewall with the brake and clutch hydraulics and moved it over a few inches to the driver's side. That seems like a bear of a job :-( but it don't see any other solutions.

I've seen some that graft a late model firewall in. I just sold the cowl off the one I parted out to a guy in Tucson for that.

 I just moved the brace, redrilled the firewall for 4 bolts and put in the booster.it's not completely hooked up yet, but by preliminary fitting it should work. looks ghetto, but why should it be different than everything else I touch.

I might have a Mark's spacer for that setup.

Good info, thanks!
Looking at your sig line are you running an FZJ80 rear housing? With FF and locker? Is that possible?
Leaf springs? Or ...?

Ok, what the heck is this?

I've been looking at this thing for a week now. Finally took a wrench to it this afternoon and it is sitting on my bench - destined for the trash, or swap meet....

Mounted on the firewall and connected to hydraulic lines, a vacuum line and a cable to a dash-mounted control. I'm guessing its the original transfer case actuator which must have been a hybrid vacuum/hydraulic system.

Good grief.

The rig also had an under dash lever connected to a series of arms, pivots and rods that I'm guessing was the high low transfer case shifter.

Good grief again.

And a three speed on the tree?
What was Toyota thinking???

Mine was set up the same way. I don't remember how they work, but the actuator I thought was all vacuum for the transfer case. I thought it did the hi/low.

The axel housing is an FJ40 FF from a Japanese model, I got it in a round robin deal with DanS and Josh (Chamba). The Third member is an elocker from an FZj80. You can only run a 80 elocker in a FF axel. I have a 80 elocker in the front too! Here is my build thread:

I have been neglecting this project for the better part of 7 years now.

I dont' recall if the 1970 had the big rib on the firewall or if power brakes were available by then, and I can't see it on yours. Either way, looks like yours fits the booster now. I would dump that booster (I think it's so big b/c it's a dual diaphragm unit) and use something else. You can use boosters off FJ-60s, hiluxes, 1980s Supras, and probably lots of other Toyotas. They bolt right up, you might have to adjust/modify pushrods and some you have to mount upside down because the 4 bolt pattern is offset. This just puts the vacuum fitting 180* off, but otherwise changes nothing.

BTW, keep up the momentum, it's awesome!
