I recently went through this with Amazon with a WARN 8274-50. The first one wasn't packed properly and I had to return it due to damage. I also had to pay the return shipping via UPS since it was considered an "oversized" package. Amazon sent me a new 8274-50 and eventually refunded my shipping, but it was a huge ordeal having to deal their website and customer service reps that didn't speak english well.
All and all I saved a few bucks, but I didn't have the customer service that I would have had if purchased locally. Amazon does a great job on small/light things, but they sure didn't have a clue how to ship a 120 lb winch...
Don't know if I am remembering britklr's ordeal or someone else's, but yeah, Amazon has trouble with heavy items.
That said, our XRC12 wasn't exactly packed well from another supplier I ordered from. Box was badly torn, but winch was undamaged.
Part of the issue is with packing, but the other part is that a winch is darn heavy and shipping and delivery people in the package biz rarely have someone there to help when they come across such stuff among the packages they're working. So abuse is practically guaranteed for a winch on the way to your door. It pays to work with a vendor with a good rep in case you need to return a damaged winch.
I just ordered an XRC12 Smittybilt from Amazon. No taxes and free shipping plus cheapest price anywhere. It was doulble boxed when shipped and delivered. Arrived in good shape, no bad experience here. Good Luck!

Yep I did exactly that with the same winch! No problems at all. Free shipping, got here in a week or something iirc. I don't recall it being overly long, but my experience with amazon is that their shipping times are all over the board.
No special box, just came in the standard superwinch box, which is heavy!
Looks like its still about the same price as when I ordered it. It was up to 630 before dropping back down. FYI mine did not come with the pulley; I guess some of the earlier ones did. All in all it was super easy and straight forward ordering from amazon. No problems encountered.
I got my XRC12 from Amazon back in December. As VCCruzr said, it was double boxed and since my has the Amazon Prime it shipped two day for free. I ordered it on Monday and it was sitting on the front porch when I got home on Wednesday. My let me know it would be there when I got home because it was too **** heavy for her to move.
Now I just have to follow Greentruck's write-up to clock and water proof it and then get it mounted up in the ARB.
