Anyone have a CV Joint Failure? (7 Viewers)

Hey Dan,
Have a really good look at the tear marks on the cage, are any of them old, that is, can you see if some of the tear/crack was here some time ago before it let go this time?

I looked at that but the grain at the tear seem consistently colored. However there appeared to be a very small void or differential in the grain where it snapped. The contributing factor was IMO the lack of CV lube. The bigger question, since there wasn't prior evidence of it leaking, is where did it go? I used the Toyota kit with dual grease tubes...each tube fully emptied into the boot. As I mentioned I've been under the rig lately; namely with the 1" BL project and didn't see any seepage. And above and beyond that I'm usually all over inspecting the CV boots as they've been a general problem on and off forever. Bizarre!

Well add me to the list.

Tuck has 105K on it with original CVs as far as I can tell.

Was out at a local rock crawling area yesterday doing some sills work on a club run. Was going up a series of slickrock ledges. The CV failed when I was trying to climb one of the ledges with the wheel turned nearly to full lock to get lined up for the next ledge (Serious driver error here I believe as it places a lot of stress on the CV). ARB was engaged. about 2/3 of the way up the 1.5' ledge and "POP". managed to get the truck to a flat spot and got flange/prop shaft removed for drive home in 2wd. The worst part about it was that the CV that broke was my good one. the other has been making clicking sounds/vibration for a few thousand miles. I plan on replacing both and am 90% convinced that I will use OEM after reading people's experience with NAPA. I plan to keep the semi good one in my truck as the spare and replace both with new.

NO driver error there UNLESS you were on the gas too much. I've been in that situation a 100 times and no failure. 4-LO, front locked, full turn, obstacle. We NEED that capability.

On the trail, sometimes things just happen...don't blame yourself!

Defiantly not to much gas. There was no wheel spin involved, and no jumping or hopping, just walking it up the step. Probably half throttle to get it to climb. Wish I had pics but at the time was too irritated to do it.

I am going to lower my truck by a smidge (.5" or so) when I install the new ones just to reduce some of the stress.

My CVs are stock, original, 230K miles. All street driving, but lots of towing a 6000# race rig.
Boots are original too. I'm all set to replace the half shafts sometime soon. Had the DS joint clicking a bit recently, after the truck had been on the lift for a week [suspension in full droop] for a TB, water pump job. As soon as the new half shaft was on my shelf, the original settled in and stopped clicking. Of course, right?

Doesnt matter. Just call Beno or Cdan they will have the part number and the best prices. I had a local dealer try and charge me around $72 for one and through Beno it was around $27.

I'm anxiously waiting on a quote from Mr. Onur this moment. I decided to go OEM, It's gonna hurt but not as much as a blown NAPA/EMPI axel in the middle of nowhere with babies on board.

Anyone have the part number for the OEM toyota boot kit? (min is an LX, does it matter?)

Part # 04427-60120, should be the same for the LX. I ordered mine from Jacque at TRDParts4u for about $30. Still have not done the rebuild...:meh:

Tonight and tomorrow's fun project.

Jon, Make sure you have the seals that go in between the axles and the front diff. It takes some force to get those axles seated back in the diff and I think I might have damaged the seal I am talking about while shoving my passenger-side axle in. I think it is labeled a "must replace" part in the FSM for this job.

I'd also get some hose clamps. My new axles lasted about a month or two before the yellow bands started to loosen.

Thanks Paul.

Fortunately it's not my first parade with the CVs. I had to pull them twice while installing and reinstalling the center diff for the ARBs. The process is becoming routine for better or worse. The drivers side CV is in ok condition so it will be the new spare. I'm making sure I have a list of tools so I can do this on the trail next time.

I have a set of the McMaster's waiting. I'll be hawk eyeing them until they are needed. Got just about everything pulled tonight. Should be cake tomorrow to finish up.
