The swiveling lunette coupler with the bent shaft...

Hoping somebody would be kind enough to measure the distance from the front outward annular stop (that rests against the front of the female taper and is also the beginning of the machined male taper section I think) all the way back to the beginning of the threaded portion in the rear. Also the length of the threaded section if possible. (And if easy, what cast number there is on the bent shaft.)

I think some of the M101s also had a bent shaft swivelling lunette. Anybody knows if those are the same as on the M105?

Thanks very much.

M105 and M101A1 do not rotate. The pintle rotates on the vehicle. Only the 1/4 ton trailers have lunettes that rotate. Do not know about the Canadian M101. M101A2 and above have surge brakes.

I am also under the impression that the tapers are also different, so you couldn't insert a larger lunette into 1/4ton. My M101A1 parts should arrive today if you still want some measurements. I guess you could cut the stop that prevents rotation, but not sure if it would rotate.

The lunettes, do turn, if you loosen the nut. I turned my down to tow home. all 105 and 101a2, 101a3, rotate. The newer 1101 type have a different adjustable lunette, all together.

I can measure, but not understanding from where to where. Also they will not interchange.

I just went out and took a measurement, from the stop to the end of threads. @ 8 1/4 inches. I don't have a lunette, unbolted, to measure the complete threads. Hope this helps

I'm pretty sure they (should) rotate on the 105, which they better do if the pintle hook on the trucks doesn't (and I have certainly seen fixed pintle hooks on deuces. Not sure if they all do.)
The 416 has a straight lunette shaft if I'm not mistaken.
Did you buy a bent shaft lunette for a 101? If so, where from, if I may ask?

I meant from the front stop ring to the beginning of the thread or where the nut hits the female part if the lunette is in place.
And you mean the 101 and 105 don't interchange, right?

8 1/4", excellent, that includes the full thread then, good to know.
Could you measure from the front stop to where the nut hits the female taper, if you have a chance, please?

Do any of the 105s have a spring in there?

thanks

They do not interchange.

From the front stop to the end of the tongue housing is 6 inches.

The lunette, will not rotate, as you're driving. It will only turn 180 degrees, when the nut is loosen. It let you change the lunette height.

What are you trying to do?

There is no spring inside the housing.

thanks, appreciate that.

I'm surprised this would not be intended to rotate. You gotta have something that allows the trailer to articulate and perhaps roll over without the pintle and lunette binding.

What is happening here is that my new-to-me trailer has a universal joint system that is custom-built around one of those swiveling lunette shaft and housing (picture a system welded on a military lunette shaft), but I don't know if it's the 105 or 101 so I'm trying to find out which by checking the dimensions, so that I can try to find later a full military lunette assembly to use on the trailer as an alternative to the current system.

If somebody has some telling dimensions for the 101A, that would be great to have too, for comparison.

I have seen pics of the 101A1 lunette and it sure looks like the 105. The 416 has clearly a very different taper though.

I have built another system for an earlier trailer with an even beefier swiveling lunette but that one had a spring system built-in.

Okay, I've posted some different shots of the lunettes.

First one is a M101, from the 50's, it rotates 180 degrees. The length from the tip of threads to the stop is @ 6 1/8 inches.

Second one is a M101 A2, newer style, it does not rotate. It has a surge brake system.

Third one is the M105, also rotates and is huge compared to the 101.

thanks so much for taking the time to take the pics.

They do look similar indeed, but from what you tell me it looks like the 101 is 6 1/8 from stop to tip whereas the 105 is 8 1/4 from stop to tip. That is a big difference and should be easy to differentiate them then.

(Oddly, I have seen the 7354577 part (the coupler ring as they call it) listed as both 101 and 105 (in different places) so there is plenty of confusion about that out there it seems, and why I thought they might be the same.)

You will find alot of information on the Steel Soldiers site. They have a trailer forum also and classifieds too. Good luck

yup, excellent, confirms what I found on the 105 one. And, yes, big difference between the 2.
It's a sure thing now that my system is built on the 105 lunette shaft. Yes, I'll try to get some pics. It's an interesting concept and very well executed.
Now to find a 105 coupler. And a nut! (but at least it looks like the nut is the same for both.)

If you go to the Steel Soldiers site and search for " 91W350 ", his name is Glen. He works at a scrap yard and goes through tons of 105's. He will sell you what you need. Good guy too. Send him a PM and he can ship it to you.

excellent tip, thanks, will try that.

May I say that you referred me? If so, what would he know you under (PM if you prefer) ? thanks.

You could cut off the existing hitch and either go with a new surge system.
Or do like I did and weld an adjust channel on the front. I can use a 2" ball coupler or lunette.

Thanks.
Yes, of course, I could cut off what I have and reweld something else, and may well end up doing that, but I'm starting out with the -apparently- simplest and least invasive solution, which would be to find a replacement lunette coupler.

Thanks for posting that info. I have what i thought was a spare M101 offset lunette, but measuring it seems to indicate that it's am M105 lunette. :frown:
