Thinking about taking a trip up to Red River/Taos area... anybody have any insight?

Hey Howdy, ever get any response on your inquiry? I'm planning a trip from the west coast to Santa Fe in a few weeks and have been looking at the Little Painted Desert north of Winslow Az as a possible stop. How was your run? Any thoughts, recommendations or suggestions appreciated.
I didn't get too far off the beaten path at Taos, but I did cross the Dunn Bridge at Arroyo Hondo and up the switchbacks on the other side, then took Montosa Road back to 64. It's so desolate out there I didn't want to venture too far out. Taos is great, highly recommend the tamales at Ranchos Plaza Grill.
