So I've been looking for a clean set of LX 470 silver wheels to replace my chromies.
A set came up on CL near me so I went to check them out. The owner washed the vehicle and then decided to clean the wheels as well. He spraed this on them.

This was the result.

I feel your pain, I think your going to have to repaint those...They couldn't of used clear coat on the wheels before as I have used that product a lot with no issues..

He took the vehicle to the car wash just before I got there and he believes the car wash used a different product to clean the wheels.

amazing how the brake dust goes in a circle like that :)

Yea, it looks like a repaint/powdercoat is in order.

I think it has exposed a repair job, or you have rubbed it down a bit now ready for paint. Not an issue, just drop the price and get them done professionally or DIY.

^ I was going to purchase these wheels. I asked the guy to drop the price significantly so that I may powder coat them. Powder coating is about $300+ for four wheels. Not cool.

I have used that exact cleaner/wash on my pre 2003 16'' wheels and it works great. That product didn't do that to those wheels.

You all clean your wheels??? I'm out of here!!! Headed back to the 80 forum where our goal is to get dirty!

There is absolutely no way that product took that paint off, unless the wheel was at some point repainted with very soft and cheap paint.

Most OEM wheels are finished in similar fashion as paint using a 2-part paint system with a clearcoat that should be resistant to these types of chemicals. I've been in the detailing industry for the last 3+ years full time, most of the wheel cleaners I use are ph neutral and are completely safe even if left to dry on the surface for hours (not recommended by any means, but we have tested this just to see what happens on scrap wheels).

This most likely happened because they were poorly refinished. Maybe a rattle can job on the driveway, or a cheap bodyshop that sprayed the wheels without the proper prep. Look at the very outer edge of the wheel that usually gets curb rash, it looks like half of that edge is missing paint, my guess is due to a tire mounting machine rubbing it off the surface. You would never see that happen to an OEM finish or a powdercoated wheel/properly painted wheel.

Good news is, most good powdercoating places would charge you around $400 to refinish all of those wheels. Maybe even less since it's a very basic 1-piece wheel that won't require much media blasting to prep the surface. Some shops around here would do the whole set for under $250, granted it won't be show-quality but for a truck, it's not a big deal. If you do go this route, just clean the wheels with every car wash to prevent the brake dust from caking onto the surface. No need for wheel cleaners if you wash them regularly, Toyota brake dust is very minimal and nothing like German cars.

Yeah. I think you're right. This may not have happened before I got there.

IMO, ditch those wheels. IMO, that wheel set was/is the ugliest wheels that came stock on the 100. You're better off investing your money in another set of wheels than spending money fixing those. OR plasti-dip them and save yourself hundreds of dollars.

I was thinking the exact same thing. For the money/time spent removing tires, fixing, remounting and rebalancing, you could just get another set.

Has anyone every remove the silver paint to reveal/change to all black or does black just come off as well?
What is the black (paint, epoxy, powder coat)?

I used that exact product.. and it DID take the paint off my lx470 wheels just as shown BUT only on the drivers side...
It was left on the drivers side longer as I sprayed them all then scrubbed them pass. side first... by the time I got to the drivers side... I got the exact same results as what you see in his pictures.... have used the same product many times before with zero ill effects... JUST SAY'N it Happened to me ALSO
