Ahh. Thanks. It was a bugger to get that split nut off. I’ll be sure to get it back in there correctly. Its in pieces getting a spa currently.

Just finished with this MONSTER Parker 97 1/2X. 7” jaws and 200+ pounds! Found it in really good shape. All original hardware and straight handle were a huge bonus!

Been steadily working on vises over the last year. I usually only post with the rarer stuff. I think this qualifies! 7” vises are pretty hard to come by (more so than 8” it seems).

Once cleaned up I realized most the paint was gonzo. So, decided to strip it down and use black metal oil from Sculpt Nouveau. Letting it cure for a few days then I'll clear coat, lube and reassemble. Looks darker in real life. Iphones makes every picture look like make believe.

It's hard working on a vise without a vise.

@Guyute That looks amazing! Looked into the Sculpt Nouvo a while back. I just got my hands on a HUGE 8” Ridgid (Columbian casting) and thought I might try a “poor man’s version” of that process. Basically just oiled up and heated it a bit. Then sprayed flat black (lightly) while ragging it mostly off. I like how it turned out.

nice! How are the jaws held in place on that ^ one? Is it just a press fit?

Yeah. They slide into that channel pretty tightly but are then also pinned by 6 small rods that pass through the bottom of the “T” jaw.

Turned out great!

Not sure the SN oil was worth the cost, but now I have a 3 lifetime supply. Little goes a long way.

What are you using on the sliding bits? I already have some Trewax and thought I'd use that. It's going to be a working vise.

Trewax Paste

Any paste wax is ideal. I usually just put a light film of bearing grease (red). It attracts more dust than I like but its lubricating and anti-corrosion capabilities more than make up for that.

Nice! Has a clearcoat look to it.

Indeed. Used the black oil from Sculpt Nouvea then their clear coat over it. Some paste wax on the sliding bits and bearing grease on the big a55 screw thing. Fluid Film on the handles. No idea why I spent so much time on this thing. Oh. That's right.... because I read through this thread before purchasing a 'new' vise.

Gonna punish it like I stole it now.

@Guyute Did you have that split nut machined? I have never seen one that pristine. Looks fantastic!!!

Did a great job Nick! That little guy has TONS of character. LOVE the pointy meatball and lock downs. Giving off old Craftsman vibes.

I thought I’d throw it out here in case anyone local was interested. I put this Reed 406 up for sale. I’d also be interested in trading it for something smaller. It’s missing the swivel pin and handle. The swivel jaw is stuck and one ear is broken on the base. I’m losing interest in the bigger vises. I’m particularly interested in the Reedsman vises, Wilton c, Reed C, or 519x craftsman. Open to others though.

@Mr Wonderful
That's a "parts vise" and that's a great thing for you! The center nut for the base on a 6" goes for about $50 anywhere I've seen one. Those lock downs look great and are another $50 for the pair. The main spindle nut is $25 all day. All of these can be marketed nationwide and shipped cheaply. Less so is the spindle but there are buyers out there for the $75 range. The dynamic doesn't look awful but guys are not really buying main bodies as it is hard to get your half and their half to match up age and use wise. That said... If you can get that swivel moving (off) there are a LOT of broken ones out there with guys trying to force theirs and need it replaced. I'd start listing on EBay for the smaller parts. Hope that helps!

Good luck on the Reedsman! GREAT Vise and worthy of the hunt!
