Getting ready to get a new windshield installed in my 1993 80. I will order the gasket from Toyota. I've read all the threads on proper replacement. Can any of you in the Denver area recommend a good glass shop that will do this job right the first time.

Thanks in advance

Pete

Don't know anyone in Denver but one route would be to call the local Lexus and Toyota dealers and ask them who they use.

If you can use an OEM windshield gasket. I have been going back and forth with safelite for over a year (my insurance company uses them) about leaks. I finally got them to use a OEM gasket and the windshield fits better with no leaks.

How much is the OEM glass? I'm sure the color would match better too.

Need to make sure they use sealant per the FSM as well. When they don't it will leak after a short time. I was TOLD they did what I asked on my last replacement, couple of years later it started leaking

I called two local Toyota dealers in the area and they both told me SafeLite. I called them up and scheduled appointment and requested PGW glass (and you should too unless you're going with expensive OEM). I printed the FSM instruction page for the tech and went over it with him prior to install - he agreed. He was a young guy and was receptive to my request. He did a good job too - no leaks and/or squeaks.

Good luck

Reviving an old thread here, but the info is still good. I just had mine replaced with a guy recommended to me by Amory at Slee.

Diamond Auto Glass
Matt Boltz

I bought an OEM gasket and he installed it using the proper sealant. It was $175 for PGW glass which is the only type they use. He even coated some of the small rust spots in the window frame with some rust penetrating primer. Seems he did a pretty good job, and I'd recommend him.

I've left a message for Matt at Diamond Auto Glass, per the same recommendations above.

Hopefully using Matt/Diamond will make my installation painless. When talking to the installer, if I provide him with the FSM pages, will he really be removing all of the indicated items? Seems like a pretty crazy list just to replace the glass. See attached .PDF for details...

Yeah, my windshield actually still leaks. Just found out a couple days ago. Not really sure what to do now since it was apparently installed properly. Maybe make sure he uses a ton of sealant.

I used safelite at the corner of iliff and Havana. Oddly they reused the original gasket and aftermarket glass with sealer.

I am utterly surprised it does not leak a drop. I questioned their process and the installer assured me it would be fine. Guess he was right.

Well, they never called me back so I guess I'll move along. Sorry to hear about that.

That's right around the corner from me. I'll give them a call.

My original gasket appears to be shot.

I'm getting a LOT of water inside from this side.

Thanks.

Called Safelite and spoke with the regional rep and the local store manager. They can provide a gasket, but not an OEM one. Based on the stories I've read about using non OEM gaskets, I'm not interested in going that route. That policy also has me wondering if they will know how to properly install and OEM gasket. I have the FSM, but experience trumps instructions always...

Yeah your gasket looks shot. I bet you've got rust under there too. Interested to see how it turns out. Let me know if you find someone good, I'd really like to find a good installer for the next time the window cracks.

Yeah, I'm definitely concerned about rust... :(

I will be following up...

Are the above pics of your windshield the way the gasket was inserted, or did you pull the lower portion out.?The bottom of your windshield gasket is not seated properly. No wonder you're getting water in the inside. The rubber lip of the gasket that is lying on the cowl should be under the windshield cowl. Definitely order a new OEM gasket from either Dan or beno. These gaskets are rubber and can really dry out over time especially in places like colorado.

Yeah, I posted another thread about that situation after noticing that none of the other 80's in my club are like that.

I'm not looking forward to getting the glass out and seeing what the damage is...

I have used Safelite mobile install a couple of years ago. Provided the OEM gasket, intaller applied goop to both sides, not problems, was PPG glass.

I just called them for another new front windshiled, they now only offer ther own Safelite glass. Any issues with it?
