Any 100 series & 80 series owners, or is that just wrong?

I have an awesome 93 '80 series cruiser. It meets my expectations and exceeds them, generally speaking. My wife loves the rig too, but as most gals, when she gets a rig, its kinda against the grain to go buy a 'new' rig that is 10-13 yrs old and 130k old.

so...we are nearing getting another rig and I was wondering if any of you have the 100series, and what are your thoughts?

Should I stick to the 80 series, which would make sense, since I have grown to 'know' them. How about the 4oth anniversary model?

Just wondering what you all think....

thanks

Check my sig at the bottom :)

I like the 100 series, and it is my wife's DD, if you can afford the price premium, it is a great vehicle, in reality it is everything the 80 is but better for most people. Personally, I wouldn't give up my 80 for one, because I love the body style and knowing it is just a tougher more capable vehicle (lockers, solid axle, etc.), not that I actually use those capabilities. They go together great in the driveway, just keep an eye on 'em or in 9 months you might have a brand new baby FJ Cruiser :D.

Two 80's and a 100 here.

Different trucks good for different things...

My '93 takes a beating, and is a great DD

My mom's '97 is like new, handles better than most new SUV's IMHO, and is smaller than the 100 for getting around Atlanta

My dad's '98 100 is what we use whenever the entire family or a lot of people have to go anywhere.

Before you settle on a 100, test drive a nice '97 80. My lifted, part time 4wd '93 and my moms cherry '97 are two completely different driving trucks. The later interiors w/ leather are also more refined.

I have both. Each have their own personality. The 80 is great for my teenage boys. The 100 is my daily driver and used for long trips. Some days I think I like the 80 better, it is such a beast of of a truck. However my aging and overweight body loves the 100.

Good luck!

the 100 is a better road vehicle, no doubt.
the 100 is a much safer vehicle, no doubt
the stock 100 is as good as the stock 80 for mild offroading where size is not an issue, no doubt
the 80 is better than the 100 for hardcore offroading, no doubt
:)

And the 80 is a beautiful truck with great lines, ABSOLUTELY NO DOUBT

What is your budget, do you plan on doing any mods? I've had both, and just finished my first upgrades on the 100. I havn't had a chance to take it off road yet, but on the tarmac I wouldn't trade it for anything!

See my sig for a link to the build up...

budget isn't an issue.
I have considered the 2003 100, simply because from what I have heard of other owners say about it, reliabilty is a nudge better, few later features, etc.

I don't tend to put alot of aftermarket add-ons as I like my stuff fairly stock, its just a personal thing of mine, plus, I don't off-road them so I don't need the extra capabilities. I simply love the safety aspect, as a guy hit me in my previous 94 80series...he was doing 70, I was doing 55, I got out of the rig after T-boning him and stopped traffic, helped my wife, who was fine, then helped him...he wasn't so fine.

I appreciate the fact that around here there isn't a day I can't make it to work, which is fairly important for me to be there.

The long road runs sound like the 100 may be a good option.

We've got a 93 80 series that is a back-up truck for us, plus I just put J springs and spacers on it and am picking up 36" tires tonight (wife not happy). 182K.

She drives our 99 100 series as her daily driver. 115K.

The 100 series is a FAR better road vehicle, trips, etc. The 80 still has the "truck" feel, and I like that. 80 used for camping trips, some light offroading (although that is going to change with the above mentioned setup.)

Only drawback to what I'm doing with lift and tires is it is not going to be as easy for the in-laws to cruise around in the 80 when they come to town!

I guess I'm a little a-typical, because I also have a 95 Disco that's pretty built up and a 66 Series truck, just to keep my options open...

We just moved into a new neighborhood and people keep asking us "how many people live there?"

I have a 93 & 96 and my wife drives a 98, there is no question the 98 is more comfortable, alot more power and a much better ride on the street. I love my 96 as a dailly driver and offroader but we always take the 98 out when we go anywhere as a family.

if you are not going to do major off road driving get the 100 you will be happier

Safer? No doubt there's little if any difference, now come get your panties :flipoff2:

Having an 80 and a 100 is kind of like having a hot young girlfriend and a good loyal wife.

How could that possibly be wrong?

I'd agree with the safer statement. I think the improved road handling, the better brakes, and the more advanced airbag system make a difference, as does the more advanced traction control.

No fighting please.

I have a 97 80 which I absolutely love driving. If something happened to it though, I would not think twice about replacing it with an 02-04 100 series. I think they are both great vehicles. What I have learned about 100s from reading the 100 forum tells me I could fix up a 100 just as capable as my 80 for the off roading that I do. I don't think you could go wrong getting a 100 if that is what your choice was.

Get her the 100 series. I have a 1994 80 and the wife’s has a 2001 100. She loves it, perfect for her, perfect for road trips and hauling the kids and their crap around. As stated early, better ride, better brakes, more power and more refined. She will be much happier in the 100 and you will be jealous of her ride. Just get used to making up excuses why you need to drive it.

Got the 80 first and the 100 three years after! The 80 gets jealous sometimes ;)

I wouldn't take the 100 on some of the more difficult trails, but I love driving it. It is certainly better for the daily driver (not that the 80 is bad) I just get better mileage and it is much quieter.

As far as maintenance, at least they take the same oil filter, no confusion there (unless you use the extra larger Napa Gold, I can't seem to fit it in the 100.)

Good luck!

Man, you guys are makin' want to talk the fiancee into getting rid of her '99 Heep Grand Cherokee and into a 100 - just so I could drive it every once in awhile :)

We have both as well. I drive the 93 LC, she prefers the 99 Lx 470.
Both are different beasts.
So go get her a pink panty!
