I replaced the retractable one on a 2nd gen 4runnr with a fixed one with a tundra? Part number? Anyone tried this on an 80? If so happen to have the part numbers?
Hm. Maybe I'll just stick with the TMS snorkel and do a rubber antenna with the spring mount on the hood, and run the HAM antenna off the rear of the truck. Seems like more unnecessary work just to run the OEM snorkel.
Personally I do not use the radio very much. I like the oem snorkel more based on appearances than the others. I may give a wireless antenna a try or relocate to the bumper. However I won't have the snorkel for a couple months. So a little wait till then.
Have you given thought to putting the antenna on the other side? As in were it would go in a right hand driver market? There has to be a kit somewhere for this right?
Has anyone mounted a HAM/CB in either the ashtray or above the radio?
*Edit- I found the Slee writeup of the Uniden 510 in the ashtray. This is perfect. I'll just run this CB with a firestik on Yoda's rear mount, a rubber antenna in place of the factory, and the TMS snorkel. Does this sound like a decent setup?
Not the ashtray or slot above the radio, but the Cobra 18 fits in a single DIN slot, so if you have a single DIN aftermarket radio you can fill the gap with that and not have to worry about an external speaker like you do with most CBs that have a top or bottom facing speaker instead of the front speaker.
(This doesn't apply to you, but if anyone else is considering the splitter method WagonGear has a setup for that to make it fairly easy. http://wagongear.com/shop/antenna-mount/ )
If it's just a standard old Firestik like at the truckstop, it's tuned for the CB range. You'd be lucky to get much of anything on it on FM. Some Firestiks also have NOAA emergency weather radio capability, but this is ABOVE the FM broadcast band, so again doesn't work there. You need something that refers specifically to "FM broadcast band" or something to that effect.
These adapters or splitters some mention may be able to give you FM broadcast reception on CB, but I've never used one so they will need to comment on what does what by who on that.
Woods,
Had a chance to read through the Wagongear link Dazrin provided in the post just above my last one. Here's a link on the install of their mount: http://wagongear.com/project/antenna-mount-info/
As Dazrin's link notes, Wagongear just provides the hardware to mount the antenna to the stock location.
To get FM out of mounting the CB antenna there (probably a 2' would be best, but a 3' might work, but do NOT forget the spring at the base or you'll be breaking things.)
Note that you can also use the splitter with a CB antenna located elsewhere. Assuming it does what It says it does, that should get your FM signal back.
When my factory antenna broken I ran the coax to the back and mounted an am/fm firestick to a yotateq mount (works great and I get better reception than I did with the factory antenna). Since people are saying the splitter and combo antenna aren't great, you could run the cb antenna to the other side on the back on another yotateq mount. It is easy to run the coax to the back behind the panels.
@JeraCruz thanks so much. That's exactly what I wanted to know!!! Looks really cool. I am definitely going to do this for my CB antenna, and might have the AM/FM back there as well.
My experience- I happen to live nearish to the Firestik manufacturer. A buddy of mine went and talked to the owner, who told my buddy that the Firestik is not the antenna to use in an application where the mount is not above the vehicle. They sell a top loaded antenna, called a Firefly, specifically for this. I went and talked to the owner as well, installed the Yotatech rear CB mount with the Firefly and the recommended hardware to go with it, and a splitter for the FM radio. The reception on both the CB and FM is amazing, many more miles from town for FM and the CB is actually useful with well over a mile of separation and no line of sight between vehicles. This setup way outperforms the stock FM antenna and every magnet mount CB antenna I ever used. SWR is 1.2:1, which is well within the preferred range. Also, the SWR did not change appreciably with the addition of the splitter. I couldn't be happier with the setup, and rarely use my MP3 library on the trail anymore.
I would also highly recommend a call to Firestik before purchasing anything, even from another vendor (like Amazon, which has some great deals). They can help you avoid buying the wrong stuff. All antennas are NOT equal, and each situation is unique.
