Hi all,new here to the group, although this site has proved to extremely in my last year of 80 series ownership. Baught a 93 hdj81 from the UK last year and have loved every minute of it touring Ireland as much as I could.

Now so,she won’t start at all since the recent cold spell. Before this, since I baught it really, every so often she wouldn’t start in park but would start in neutral. Always started with a flick of the key no issues there. Now she won’t start at all, switch over relay clicks and nothing happens. I’ve checked all the clamps, fusible links look okay, and I’m getting 12 volts down to the starter. If I turn the key in the ignition and hot wire the starter by jumping the post with 12v to the smaller terminal she will start right up. I took out the starter and bench tested it and it works perfect. Would I be correct in saying that this is a solenoid issue,as it’s receiving 12volts and will start once I jump the terminals,or could this be an ignition issue and or neutral safety switch?

I’ve already spent many hours looking it over and unfortunately I’m running out of time to get it sorted for an upcoming trip and I only get an hour or two a week working on it at the moment so I’m looking to see what this community thinks and where to point my attention. I can put my hand to anything mechanical but not great when it comes to electrics. Any help would be highly appreciated.

If it starts in N but not P, I would say it's the NSS and maybe adjustment of such.

Otherwise, it you have the starter out, take apart the solenoid and look at the contacts to see if they are burned heavily and you can replace them, otherwise, install a new starter since it's out.

Check you battery cables to make sure they are not corroded or aged or loose. The cables themselves can get to the point they don't conduct well and the fittings crimped on no longer connect due to internal corrosion.

Replace your fusible links as a matter of PM.

Do you have any alarm system on the truck?
