Annoying rattle...how hot does the exhaust get?

About two weeks ago I noticed this annoying rattle that starts at about 10mph. It doesn't happen at idle or I'd crawl under and positively ID. After last week's 700 mile Sierra trip, I can no longer stand it. I believe the cat is contacting my WK slider here. Can I dent in the cat a bit? Second option is I found hi temp silicone sheet that I can stuff in there and is rated to 500 degrees. Really don't want to remove the slider and notch...this side was a beatch to install.

Cats get extremely hot, well above 500, more like 1500,

I'd try getting a big pry bar and "persuade" the exhaust a bit to gain a bit of clearance, wouldn't take much.

I have an exhaust vibration at idle, but no sliders.

I'd start with the prybar method, cheap and quick.

I have the same problem. The white knuckles have like 1mm or so of clearance with the cats and 100% contact with the heat shield. Tried bending the heat shield. Worked for a while but came back. I gave up and will fix it when i get to it. Lol.

use a pry bar to make some room in that gap and file/grind some space into that bracket.

That is just a heat shield, tinny, shouldn't take much mangling to make some room.

My down pipe that connects to the muffler is completely broken off so I tried using some bailing/metal wire to pull the pipe up. Didn’t work too well for me but may work for you.

I bought a sheet of generic exhaust manifold gasket material and wedged a hunk of it between the cat and the slider. That has worked pretty well for several years. Last week I guess I “self-clearanced” it at Rubithon. So it’s no longer an issue.

My catalytic converter rattles, so I’m going to cut it off.

I had a customer who thought the same thing and it was the upper half of the heat shield rattling sounded just like a bad cat. I removed and repaired it put it back on and noise is gone. Might be worth checking.

I have removed all the heat shields only thing left is that cat. And I am having a custom exhaust done soon anyway to put it back inside the frame rail!

One of the upper heat shields on mine ( between floor pan and pipe), rattles like you wouldn't believe. I can't tell how those damned things are attached (still waiting on my fsm hard copy).
Also, for those with slider interference; what about a little notch in the heat shield cut with a Dremel/die grinder,etc?
