I just got what was advertised as an Amsteel blue 7/16 winch cable. The "rock sleeve" is neoprene with a stitched seam...

Does this sound correct? Did I get something that is not genuine Amsteel blue?

amsteel blue is the rope. It is originally sold on a spool.
LOTS of places will buy a spool and make winchlines out of it. However the "chaff" guard got on there or what material it consists of makes no difference.

I'm assuming the thread at the base of the spindle is there only to keep the spindle in place? The Eyelet has been woven back on itself right?

The way I understand it is real Amsteal Blue rope has center thread of some sort that ID's it as true Amsteal Blue. I have 100' of Amsteal Blue that I sent to Viking Offroad to have one of there spindles installed. I remember when I was talking to him, he mentioned something about it being legit amsteal blue rope because of this thread. You could probably call Thor at Viking Offroad and ask him, he was very helpful getting all my stuff squared away.

black tape was just a neat way of keeping the ends form unraveling.

sure looks like it.

Amsteel Blue is a 12 braid rope. Not a sheath with an interior "rope".

This is my first synth cable, and I suppose this is no surprise, but I am VERY surprised how light it feels...

I knew it is supposed to be light but... wow... ...plus, it seems so fragile...

and 12 strand is what this is...

Looks like Amsteel to me, Mark. I think you can find all of the specs on the Samson site (manufacturer).

Where did you purchase it?

There are lots of offshore rigging knock offs (rope, shackles, etc) out there... Like wire rope, I wouldn't trust anything without seeing the spool it came off and the attached factory ID. If you have any doubts take it to your local Samson rope dealer, they may be able to confirm it.
The eye splice looks way too short for a class 2 line splice, they didn't taper the tail (bitter end) and left tape on... and the securing line should be stiched through the line, not sloppily whipped... Samson gives very clear, easy to follow directions for splicing, in order to maintain line strength, and it doesn't look like they followed them at all. Personally, I wouldn't trust that eye, and that would make me suspect of the lines pedigree.

I'd guess you only buy winch line in 1000' lengths then..

I am not aware of ANY winch manu that would allow you to cut your own line.

No, not normally (BTW, it usually comes in 600' spools from the factory), but I do buy my line lengths from professional rigging suppliers, it's cheaper and if you are there they will let you see what you are buying on the manufacturers spool. They are very used to supplying manufacturers verification in writing with purchases (synthetic rope, wire rope, hardware etc), as industry demands it, for due dilligence.
Just saying be safe, know exactly what you're using, and what it's ultimate strength is, especially when you are working with very small safety factors, like in offroad recreational vehicle winching applications.
Merry Christmas to all!

Looks like it to me. Here's my first Amsteel line that was originally bought as a winch line, until the first time ever spooling it in. The swedge (Read, cheap battery terminal) that connects it to the drum popped off the end of the line. I braided a few loops and spliced it into itself turning it into a winch line extension. That was in 2002. Ever since then I have purchased my lines from Master-Pull and haven't had a single issue. Even though it's hard to tell from the image, the line is not cut, it's still one solid length.

There is no core in this line.

The tracer in AmsteelBlue will be green and red strands, they look like dental floss. That could be an imitator as was stated above, or someone could have pulled the tracer out. Often times we have pulled the tracer or part of it out because it gets in the way of the splice. If you were close to us I would say bring it and we could check it out and re splice it if necessary. If you want to re-splice that a direct bury is the easiest and strongest way to go, or we could do it too.

Also we sell bulk rope through amsteelblue.com, and the reels come in 600' or larger sections.

Thanks for the info.... do you have a picture showing the tracer?

I can try to remember to get a picture tomorrow at work, I honestly have thought about using it for dental floss when we get smoked salmon at work sometimes. Then I remember what I have heard from the guys who used to make the rope about what the rope goes through.

The red and green thread is the tracer.
