I am looking to swap the alternator out on my 1994 Landcruiser as a prevantative measure. I have found various new ones ranging from 125-325 and also some that are remanned. Any experience with brand vs remaned and/ or brand to source. OEG has a new one for 125 which seems decent but don't know about this brand. Also, I have 116k miles and am using the car in Costa Rica. Should I swap the alternator or wait until the old one goes out. No obvious problems as of yet. Either way I will buy to have on hand.

You might get another 31 years out of your current alternator given the low mileage. The brushes can wear out, but those can be replaced cheaply. I would recommend keeping the OEM alternator - it is hard to match the OEM quality. You could buy a cheap spare if it makes you feel more comfortable, but probably unnecessary.

What's that old saying...? "If it ain't broke, fix the hell out of it while you're in there and don't forget to change your head gasket"?

I'd keep a spare (OEM), but if the one you have is running fine - leave it alone.

reman toyota or denso.

Do you have any extra demands on the OEM unit?
If not I see no reason to change it !!
Think KISS keep it simple stupid !!
Even with extra demands, I think the OEM unit is fine.

If it helps you sleep better buy a cheap Chinese new unit and keep it in a box on the shelf.
Call your attorney and have them add a section to your will which instructs your descendants to use the Chinese alternator in case of failure while a local shop rebuilds the oem unit.
Easy peezy.
That OEM alternator will probably outlive you.
The alternator in my 1972 fj55 has never been apart and runs just fine at 53 years old.
