Took the 80 out a couple weeks ago and shortly after leaving all the lights came on indicating a charge issue. Revving the engine would cause the lights to intermittently go out for a short time, but then they stayed on permanently. Put the meter to it and it was not putting out any charge. I wasn’t gonna let that ruin my weekend. I had a back up battery just in case and miraculously, I made it 2 1/2 hours of the mountain without an issue. The alternator on there actually looked fairly new, I’m guessing a Toyota reman. Tried a new set of brushes, that didn’t fix the problem. Installed a new alternator from Autozone, volt meter on instrument cluster immediately shot up to just below 18, put the multimeter to the battery I was getting around 13 V and it would increase to just under 14 when revving the engine a little. After just a couple minutes all the lights came back on and getting no charge again. Came out the next day double check belt tension fired it up again, still no charge reading at the battery but not all the lights go out every time I give it a little gas. Even though the lights are going out, there’s no change on the multimeter reading and we’re still not getting charge on the battery. Any thoughts on what this might be other than another faulty alternator out of the box?

I’d start with checking the condition of the cable ends ( power and grounds) , the battery terminals and the fusible link. I’d take both alternators and have them tested. I think they can do it at AutoZone.

check your main power cable, inspect the plug. you can put a multimeter on the output cable to the battery and see if you see power....I would also check your fusible link as the output power form the alternator passes thru the fusible link and to the battery. That might be your problem if the fuse is blown....
Refer to the second to last page of the diagram to locate the wire and fusible link...

Good info, I like that upgrade. I did test power off the post on the alternator and all the fusible links. All check out and no charge at the alternator. Any idea if the charge fuse is supposed to read 12V? little to no reading on either side of the fuse.
