Just bought a 94 FZJ 80 with 71,000 in premo shape, but it gets real lame gas milage. Is there anyway, or is it worth it, to change over the all time 4x4 to on demand, like putting on a "mile marker" kit like the kit used on the old Chevys? Or do you guys know of anything else to do to get a few more miles out of the gallon. ? Any info would be great. Love the web site man, truely the best. Brian

Actually, the object of the game here at IH8MUD is to see who can get the worst fuel economy. But you can use the search key and find a lot about both of your questions. Welcome to Mud. :flipoff2:

My favorite option is to drive down a lot of hills., sometimes I get luck and have a tailwind.

Air up, tune up , synths, - a rack, lift, larger tires, etc tend to eat more fuel.

Welcome

So what MPG are you getting, and how does it run?

That's super low mileage for a 94. You may have a lot of carbon build-up from 10 years short drive cycles. I think most would recommend a good T.B. cleaning and fresh fluids for starters. How do the birf's look? In my experience, birf soup in the front differential can cut 1 to 2 MPG off your gas mileage.

BTW, it's kind of an unwritten rule around here that you can't talk about new rig purchases without posting up pics.

Consider this an official welcome :flipoff2:.

I've gotten 7mpg before pulling an FJ55 on a car hauler, probably about 7500# doing 60-70. Nothing like 150 miles between fill-ups. How's that for bad?

I haven't had the birfs looked at, but Toyota did the 60k service last year, and I'm glad the previous owner wrote the check. I will try and post my pics ASAP. Man this site is good.

If I understand correctly, one of the good folk at Slee Offroad has disconnected the drive to either the front or rear axle resulting in 2WD; I don't think the 4WD is "on demand" however as actual parts have to be removed/reinstalled to go from 2WD to 4WD and back.
