Is anyone aware of a crossbar kit that utilizes existing OEM roof rails, like this one from LFD Offroad? Ruggedized Crossbar Kit - 4th Gen 4Runner - https://lfdoffroad.com/products/ruggedized-crossbar-bundle-4th-gen-4runner?_pos=11&_fid=fb30b254e&_ss=c ? I've searched and searched but haven't found anything similar.

Not looking to support the world, or even a RTT, just a pair of traction boards, maybe a Hi-Lift, a 5-gallon gas can when the need may arise, and maybe my Thule cargo box with the light stuff i.e. sleeping bags and pads, etc.
That is an interesting idea. I have only seen the rear window side molle panel kits (Ohana Rig Supply?) that work with OEM rack but not a drop in replacements for the factory crossbars.

People utilize extruded aluminum stock along with the OEM side rails for a more durable setup. Info below.. Would require removing side rails and OEM cross bars and then installing new hardware to mount. Will also need to clean up and re-waterproof side rail hardware

This would give you a stronger mounting surface along with slots to install tie down points for your cargo...

You have a decent wish list of items that you want to get up there. Fuel tank will require something proper to be secured. I personally don't like putting fuel on the roof but I get that sometimes you gotta. Hi lift, ever actually use one? Do you have anywhere on the truck that can accept the hi lift jack ( IE steel bumpers / sliders ) Throw that thing in the dumpster and rely on traction boards + knowing when to stop pushing and burying the truck

Thanks for this, I'll read thru it. Was hoping to just be able to buy something, but love the idea that these are alum and not powder-coated steel.

I don't like the idea of fuel on the roof either, or hanging off the back as I've been rear-ended a few times, but nowhere else to put a 5 gallon can unless I keep one inside the few times I might actually need it, which doesn't thrill me either. It would be the kind of thing where I'd fill up at the last gas station I visit before heading off road, and would pour it in the tank at first opportunity when there's room. I've seen fuel can mounting plate options for various roof racks. I'm wanting to do a little longer and more remote runs in the desert, so wanting to bring along my Scepter to fill/use as needed. Rear bumpers (carriers) and aftermarket tanks aren't something I'm interested in as I'm not looking for a full expedition built, just want to be able to schlep an extra 5-10 gallons so I can plan longer Death Valley and Great Basin exploring.

Regarding Hi-Lift, bought my first one and started using it 40 yrs ago when I bought my first 4WD, and sold it to another MUD member about 15 yrs ago. Bought an updated one 20 yrs ago when I bought my '04 4Runner and shortly thereafter bought the WabFab tube adapter, which works perfectly on my 4Runner sliders the few times I've needed it, and it'll also work on the 4Runner Shrockworks front bumper. I have adapters to stick the hi-lift on the roof rails, but I usually just keep it in the rear, sideways, just inside the lift gate as I've up to this point not had much of a need to start considering using rooftop real estate. If/when I convert the LX to offroading, I'm planning to get step sliders and maybe the hi-lift will work there, plus I'll get the hi-lift wheel adapter. Most of the times I'm off road, I'm single-vehicle, so really wouldn't want to go w/o the hi-lift. My traction boards are new and haven't used them, but I imagine they won't do much if I'm high-centered on a rock pile in the desert?

yes. we sell a cross bar kit to add extrusion cross bars across the top of your OEM rails. Can be done in any length, I think that's what you're after? Our wing brackets are a direct bolt-up, here's a pic:
