That sucks man. Sorry to hear about it, but glad to hear everyone made it out safely.

My last car fire brought a profit, but it was a dodge and I fixed it. Hind sight says I should have rolled it into the street and let it burn.:D

Good luck with the Ins. co., and on the search!

Sorry about your loss. How far are you from NY city. There are a couple 80s in the area for under 4k with lockers. We could try to get you some help checking them out and get one to you as a replacement. I know of 1 that already has small swampers and an ARB bumper.

About a five day drive. I'm in the far SW corner of Canada or the far NW corner of the USA. Seattle is a four hour drive for me.

Thanks though

There's a nice SandStone LX450 with 192k, tan leather and lockers in my town for sale. Glanced at it and it seemed well cared for and no outward signs of abuse. Soccer mom rig.

Where do you live... I live in Seattle and regularly go up to Chilliwack to see my folks. Which trail did you burn up on? I'm pretty familiar with the area.

Abbotsford, It was the west Harrison Forest Service Road. Not even a wheeling trail.

Yup... very familiar with that road... that's where I snapped the frame of my '83 Toyota pick-up. There must be a curse upon that thar road!

side note....for everyone to remember to STAY clear when there is no one inside
"A Pennsylvania Firefighter was IMPALED by a heated and exploding HOOD STRUT while operating at a car fire. In this most recent "hood strut projectile" event, which happened in Swatara Township (PA), Firefighters from the Friendship Fire Company of Bressler last week arrived at a "routine" engine compartment fire which quickly changed from being routine.. A line was stretched and crews worked to open the hood...while operating, a hood shock exploded and impaled a FF in the right knee. EMS treated and transported him to an area trauma center where he was treated and spent the night. He luckily escaped without major injuries from the incident and is expected to make a full recovery."

Very nightmarish. I am going to stop procrastinating and going to put my Fire Extinguisher back in my trunk. Glad everyone's OK. I am kinda surprised that there was no sign of any failures and sounds like the whole thing just happened fast and out of the blue.

I have an extra Halon (Fireboy brand) self discharging on high heat bottle from my last boat. Wonder if it would be worthwhile to mount it under the hood somewhere? Thoughts?

I had a scary event in my 60 when the battery hold down came loose. I had some accessory wiring attached to the side terminals of the battery. The battery moved enough to short out the side terminal to the front of the body. The only damage was some burnt hood insulation probably due to having 2 gallons of water available and catching it right as it started.

Amazing!!! Glad everyone's ok!!!

This is were I mounted mine...I really like it there except that the lower center console storage compartment is hard to access now! Of course now I will have to get a bigger one!

I'm glad everyone's OK.

Tech: I didn't know that 2nd row seats had a full metal back pan. Good to know.

I have a 5# ABC bolted to the lower portion of the DS rear passenger door. It tucks under the rear seat nicely with the door closed. I'll see if I can find a pic of it.

This has me thinking though... a 5# ABC may be adequate to pass inspections, but would be rather ineffective in a real situation. I may have to add a 2nd larger unit somewhere.

Still, better to let it burn than to get anyone hurt. You made the right call to get the family back away from it.

This is terrible! I am glad you are all fine!

My condolences, glad everyone made it out ok.

Having a fire in my LC is one of my biggest fears, that's why I try to go overkill on the wiring but also use fuses that are smaller than the one reccomended, just to be on the safe side. I also keep a fire extinguisher attached to the driver's seat frame and I want to add a second one.

IIRC,

Halon works well in enclosed areas. It works by replacing the O2 with non flameable gass there by eliminating one of the three legs needed for a fire. In an engine compartment with an open bottom it would likely just flow out the bottom doing little good. A boat engine compartment is perfect for Halon because the gas can fill the compartment without leaking out.

I am now going to rethink my fire supression, or lack there of, thanks for the post and I am glad the family is safe!

BTW, That'll buff right out!

Glad your family is ok and you got out reasonably soon thereafter. How did your girls take it? Hopefully well and wont be apprehensive on future runs - kids can be resilient when you dont expect it sometimes.

I used to carry a halon fire extinguisher in a CJ7 I had owned and used it once to put out a fire in a Corolla that turned in front of me. We hit head on - thankfully having time to lock up the brakes and slow a little before impact. Her car caught on fire under the hood and couldve become a car-b-que w/out it. We both walked away. She was a new driver and pretty shook up. I really appreciated the seat belt from keeping me from going through the windshield and have worn it every single time since. I shouldve taken the fire extinguisher appreciation with me too....

Just bringing back an old thread as I sit here looking at the pics with my wife. Has the OP found a new truck? Was the cause of the fire ever determined? Has everyone run out and not only purchased a fire extinguisher or two but have they mounted them in and around the truck?

Sad to see, but you will find another.
Now you know better what to look for in a 80 series. The real question is what will ICBC give you for it?
Clear Creek Hot Springs?

I did a quick search on the po. Sounds like he bought a bj70... I feel kinda dirty like a stalker.
