I'm going to be in Albuquerque on Sat/Sun January 12-13 and would like to do a little wheeling. Alia176 has offered up his passenger seat, but suggested that I post up here and try to generate a little interest from others too. I know nothing about the trails around Albuquerque and so can't suggest any particular place to go , but if you're interested please reply and we'll try to get something organized.

Thanks!

(I reside in the San Francisco Bay Area. Have done many trails here in California, Oregon, and Utah, but no offroading yet in NM. Love all the photos I've seen, so it would be great to see some of this stuff up close.)

Double check your plane ticket. It could be a long taxi ride to Ali's place. :D

I grew up in Minnesota, and spent enough time in deep snow to last me a lifetime. Between that and freezing my tail off in subzero temps is why I live in Calif. now. :D

But if you're trying to tell me that the middle of January is no time to be wheeling in New Mexico, then I'll give up on the idea and plan to come back again sometime. I was just trying to combine a required business trip with a little play.

The difference between here and the Great White North is that we don't "live" in it - the mountains are high enough that we go play in it when we want (and we don't have to fight traffic to do it) :)

But if you're trying to tell me that the middle of January is no time to be wheeling in New Mexico...

Middle of January is a good time to wheel. I am sure you will have Ali, and myself out with you. Maybe even Onur, if he doesn't catch what Jon has. Some kind of virus, or infection that keeps you from finishing projects...

Tom,

We'll come up with something to entertain you with!

As far as Pappy's project, I think my kid will be in college by the time he is done with the killer 40 project. My kid is beginning to walk..!!

Onur said "The water pump is in." Have you removed it and installed it again? Last time I saw 'da 40 the water pump was already in. You are going backwards, Jon.

Look, give me a break. My 4Runner is ill. One at a time, por favor.

Alright then, sounds like there's enough interest and I should pack my bags accordingly. I'll fly in on Friday evening and be ready to hit the trail with Ali first thing Saturday am (that's 1/12/2008). Sounds like I should plan on at least the potential for cold weather and a little (by Minnesota standards) snow. My only constraint is that I need to be at the Doubletree Hotel in Downtown Albuquerque by 5pm Sunday. What temps should I expect? Anything I can bring you guys from California?

Hey Tom -

I'm just down the road from Ali. I look forward to meeting you and wheeling with you guys. Jan. 12 is on my calendar.

Plan for a wide variety of temps. Depending where we go - maybe to the Jemez mountains for some snow wheeling - it could be anywhere from 0 to 25 degrees first thing in the morning, with possible wind chill. But it could also warm up to 40's or 50's in the afternoon, hopefully with some nice sunshine.

Also, if we are doing snow wheeling, you will want some waterproof protection for your legs and a warm coat. See the "Xmas tree run" thread for some pictures of what happens to jeans (wet & frozen) when you're in snow up to mid-thigh. Ski pants or something similar are a good idea.

Hope this helps!

Okay, time to bump this thread. Jan 12-13 is next weekend, so I figure at least a little planning is in order. But since I have absolutely no knowledge of the trails around Albuquerque, I'm not in a very good position to lead this effort. Instead I'm just an eager participant. :) Has someone got an idea on where we show go?

I'm staying at the Double Tree Hotel on Marquette Ave NW, arriving likely 10 or 10:30 Friday night. So whenever folks want to leave on Saturday is fine with me.

If NM weather systems come from CA, you guys may be in for quite a storm in a couple of days. We had a good size one blow through last night and today, dumping lots of rain and with 50+ mph winds. No doubt this is headed East, just don't know if it will reach far enough South to get to you guys.

Unfortunately work is keeping me in Chicago next weekend so I'm out of any trail runs. However, I'm sure you'll have few vehicles to show you around the area. :D

Looks like I'll be missing the meeting too :crybaby: Tom will take my place!!

Annual meeting is Saturday night, the 12th. How long will you be here, and what part of Minnesota are you from? How about Sunday?

I know that Rory at least owes you a beer for helping diagnose the electrical issue on his 80...

Hope to meet you at the meeting on Saturday.

Or, if you are coming in on Friday night, I will be at the airport at work....stop in and say hi...I work for Delta.
