Bummer. I wasn't sure you were up on the hoops for bringing into another country. If you are camping out lots (haven't been following closely) then I can see why you want to have it with you. Generally if I'm in a tent in the middle of nowhere, I'm armed, If I'm sleeping in the truck, I'm not, if I'm tenting in a campground, I'm not.

we did our trip to alaska without a gun.. some thought we were stupid (mostly hunters) but we were fine. we hiked all over the place and camped everywhere along the way. I would bring one if I were to do it again, but you will be fine without one.. at least in my opinion.

X2. A lot of people lean on a gun for peace of mind in bear country. I would LIKE to have one along on an AK trip. In reality though, bad bear encounters are a lot rarer than the horror stories would have you believe. Being "bear aware" will save your hiney 1,000 times more than simply being armed. Of course, "bear aware" AND armed might be the best combination of all
, but I wouldn't let lack of gun keep me away from an Alaska trip.

I definitely won't cancel the alaska portion, but I was planning on doing some camping, fishing, and general hiking around. I might amend that to sleeping in the truck and not getting too far from it, although that'd be a shame. It's nice to have bells and pepper spray, but there's something about a 12 guage that gives you a bit more peace of mind. Call me a right-wing nutjob, but guns do keep the peace, especially with bears and zombies.
I'll keep looking at my options. I'm about to descend on High desert for some desert wheeling and beers. I'm in the OR mountains and there's a light snow falling. Beautiful country side.

If it were Black Bears it wouldn't be an issue, just scream at em and they take off but Grizzlies are altogether different. Just throw that steering box I gave you at em, they'll be dead before they hit the ground.

Eugene is a beautiful place. See if you can head towards McKenzie river. More nice places to see.
Sttering box? Forget it one word: DORITOS man the regular original chedder cheese variety. It's like crack for bears.

chupacabra? too far north for em'. I am pretty sure that central CA is about as far as they get. Too cold and wet for something that has little fur. Now Bigfoot and Yeti's that's another story.....

Jared's Bend Oregon Desert Run
Jared took off for points North this morning. He got in town Tuesday and went to bluehtz60's house and worked on his rig all day.
I got in late Tuesday and met Bob, Russ (another cruiserhead) and Jared down at Bend Brewing for some brews and burgers.
Wed morning Jared and I drove around Bend on "Resupply" missions.
Wednesday afternoon Jared and I headed East then south/southeast out into the high desert country. Bob and Russ had biz to attend to and could not join us.
Photos? yep, maybe more than you'll want to see. These are off my camera Jared has a load on his too. He is kinda busy driving
, so you'll probably have to wait for his unless he puts them on his blog.

"Slide show" is a good way to go but you gotta slow down the speed to read all the BS I have written in. Photos go full screen with the slide show, looks better.
Jared is a good dude. If you get a chance to meet up with him go for it.

Jon's being as generous with his commentary as he was with his home and his knowledge of Oregon. The shooting was beginners luck I think. Although damn, that was a tight grouping. I was a bit surprised that he let me crash with him given his two lovely daughters at home, but I realized why he was so relaxed when he explained his 10 years of Kung Fu and showed me his extensive gun collection. We had an amazing time in the desert. His knowledge of trivia rivals and may beat my own, of which I'm pretty proud. His truck is another story altogether. Jon took over as the latest in a short line of obsessive owners and it shows. I just couldn't stop staring at her. Literally every part that came off the line shiny was still shiny. No rust, no dust, no scrapes or dings. Unbelievable. Made me feel like a schmo for the way mine looks, and people tell me (or they used to before the trip) that mine was clean. I tried to get her dirty, but given his attention to detail and love for the thing I suspect it's already back to showroom condition.
If you've never been in the high desert, I can't recommend it strongly enough. Grab a beer with Jon at Deschutes brewery and ask him for the deluxe tour. If you're lucky you may get some tortilla soup and cookies. He's a great guy and a phenomenal tour guide. I put together two photo albums of the desert trip.

I tried to fix my power steering box with Bob and Russ, but it turns out I had the wrong box (why the hell Toyota felt the need to change the bolt pattern is beyond me, but Bob (BlueHZT60) is going to give you the box back at Cruise Moab, JT. We did take out the input seal figuring we could substitute it in for mine, but it proved to be a very minor improvement.
I also forgot to mention that while I was at the tint place getting my new Mudrak installed window tinted, I decided to pay homage to two guys that helped me immensely on the trip.
I'm in Williams Lake at the moment, heading up the Cassiar highway tomorrow. Trip's going great.

Very refreshing and theraputic (spelling)) If not, hit it on the way back down if you take the Al-can hwy back. It was also nice talking on the phone this morning. You sound great!

Hey guys,
I'm at Haines Junction now. On the public library computer, which (to show my city naivete) i hadn't realized would be a good source of communications. but, I have learned the lesson and now can coordinate better. Not sure when I'll have cell service. I was planning on going north to Fairbanks from here, then south through Anchorage to the Kenai Peninsula and Kodiak. I figure that would give the bears more time to wake up and work up an appetite.
Freak, I should be in your neck of the woods by tomorrow some time. Are you free for some Shennanigans? I can likely hang for a few days if you want to get crazy and go camp in Denali or White Mountain NP.
On another note, the truck is dieseling a little on shutoff. Thoughts?

Wow, you are moving up pretty quick, it took me longer go down from Anchorage to the US (lower 48) border, I took Alcan all the way to Montana, keep us posted!!
