Trying to sort out the details now. Will put in calls once things calm down a bit to high desert and the guys I'm supposed to meet.

Sorry to hear the news. :frown:

Hope the insurance comes through for you. Give me a call if I can help in anyway.

Thanks guys. To fill in information, it was in Pacific heights, which my friend (who moved there 6 months ago) and I thought was a safe hood for the car, considering how nice it is. What I subsequently learned from pretty much everyone I spoke to and he spoke to that it's one of the worst places in teh city, or the country for that matter, in terms of smash and grab. They got the gun (remington 12 guage, not a handgun at least), my tent, my bow (had since I was 14), my friend's US govt issue medkit (irreplaceable due to limited access to contents) and my tools (15 years gathering and collecting). Aside from that, a pair of sunglasses and my radar detector.

In hindsight, it was just so stupid of me to leave all my crap in the truck. I got complacent and looked at the city as being all flowery and happy instead of as a city. I'm from NYC, my friend's from Oakland, and we should have known better. I'm dealing with insurance claims, and everything (with the exception of the tools) is pretty straightforward. I've listed out the tools I can remember, and I'm at about 800 bucks, and I know that I haven't included nearly enough, but I'm struggling to remember each piece.

On the good news, I got my carb from Jim C, and I'm going up to Mudrak after I get my insurance estimate this afternoon, so hopefully I'll get a new lock, new window, he'll look at my power steering pump (or smog pump, whatever is whining) and I'll toss my new carb on to see how it runs. So that's a bright spot in my situation.

Also in the good news, as long as I'm here in town for longer, anyone want to revisit the idea of Speissekammer? I could probably do tomorrow night if people are interested and available.

Thanks for all the support and good wishes.

I might just be down for the Speiskammer thing now. I figure since knowing what I told you guys about will be affecting our free spending soon enough, why not?

Let me ask wifey and see if she has to work or not.

FWIW I do have some spare common tools and could sell em for a good deal and we can hit up the Craftsman dept locally if you want anything else.

Sucks man... on my AK trip they broke into my truck and took everything when we were at a campsite in Whistler. I hate theives.

Don't let it get you down!

I had this happen to our cars, still trying to find parts.Worst part is there is no way to really prevent it.Sometimes they break in for a pair of sun glasses. Mike

tools

Let me know any tools that you will need coz i do have quite a bit of extras in my tool box (20 years worth)i'll sell for next to nothing (socket sets, pry bars etc.).as they say trust no one when it comes to your stuff.

Sorry to hear it Jared. Let me know if I can send anything your way as you know I am willing to help out if needed.
Fu*%&#@ thieves.........:mad::flipoff2::mad:
Keep in touch, you have my number too.

I chatted w/ Jared earlier and it looks like things are gonna be Ok, insurance is gonna help him and he was really helped out by Mr. Gary (MudRak-again, why folks out here go to him, Cool move man, glad to hear it and IMHo why i will continue giving referrals whenever possible). Now, for those out here that missed out on Hollister, well, you should have gone b/c it's now entirely possible I won't be getting out to play as much. You missed this preemptive announcement..(O/T..sorry)

Have a safe trip, and remember to swing by here on your way through Southern Oregon.. Military Surplus, Law Enforcement, Survival & Outdoor Products by Army Navy Marine Store pick up anything you still need along the way, they're good people and always took care of us while living there. *Where I got my knife and M-65 Alpha Jacket at. ;)

Looks like Jared is rolling again. He thinks he will be in Central Oregon by Tuesday night April 14.

I'm taking him on a "High Desert" run Wed or Thursday depending on his time frame and whether he wants to ride Mt B or not. I can get $25.00 vouchers for the Mt if anyone wants to ski/ride.

When we go for the run we may make a camping deal out of it since he is already "in the mode" and all I gotta do is throw some gear in my rig.

Few of the higher altitude routes are open this early due to snow. The Steens loop and The loop at Hart Mt are still closed. The ranger said it was snowing at Hart on Thursday. I was at Summer Lake last week lots of Birds on the move, the Sand Dunes at Christmas Valley still look good for at least a drive by... who knows. We'll just head out:steer:

Drop me a line if you want to go, I'll contact you when we put it together.

Jon

Hey guys. As I write this I'm at the Crazy Norwegian in Port Orford, Oregon. Sorry I've been mia for the last week. Just dealing with the insurance hassle that ensued when some dip**** decided that my window was easier than a job, effort and morals. I've started replacing my stuff - tent first and foremost, followed by a basic toolset (somewhat dumb to bring everything along, although I was using most of it). The only outstanding item is a gun. I'm hearing that it'll be near impossible to buy a gun through a store between here and AK. I'm a little nervous about heading up there without one, so if anyone has any thoughts, please call or PM me.

On a brighter note, while on my extended stay in SF, I was able to meet and hang out with Mudrak a bit. He stayed late on Wednesday with me and he diagnosed my squealing as a fan clutch on its last legs. We reproduced it, replaced the fan clutch and I was back in business. He also gave me a window, and took out the old one installed it for me. While all this was happening, I installed the new JimC carb. Mudrak was, as the rumor goes, an awesome guy. We chatted about his past life (restoring victorian mansions), I ogled the trucks he owns and works on, and I met his Fab guy, Andy, who showed me what his operation is all about. All in all a great time. I won't get into how little he charged me for the effort lest he change his mind, but it was an extremely generous gesture on his part. He even told me he'd never seen anyone install a carb so quickly or well. OK, the last part didn't happen, but the rest did.

I went and got the window tinted at a place called Auto Image in Belmont - ask for Mike, he's a great guy and they do quality work at a good price.

So the truck is handling great, no squeal, and looks back to normal (still have to change out the mangled lock). Jim's carb is great. No more buck at 1800 or 2400 rpm, smooth power, and I don't have to drop gears on hills nearly as frequently. Great, great upgrade/mod for the price.

I'm hanging around the Oregon coast for the next few days, and then I'll be joining Jon for some desert exploration before turning north again.

Thanks again for all the support and advice. I've updated the blog recently with my girl's and my trip through Napa. Next update will be the theft and my finally getting to the Pacific ocean (amazing, I love the west coast geography and views).

Glad your back in action mate, just another part of the adventure.
As far as a gun goes, buy one in AK once you get there if you feel you really need. You are in one of the most peacfull nations on earth for 90 +% of the trip. Get a shotty w/ slugs in Alaska..
Good luck w the trip
J

I 2nd the buying a gun in ak. walmart in fairbanks had some really good deals when i was up there. I know I woudln't camp outside up there with out one and i woudlnt' get too far from the truck either. I met way too many local people that ran into bears while they were just off the main highways. I went out for a walk near the house i was renting with my girlfriend and we saw quite a few bear tracks and we turned back real quick. that was the last time we went for a walk lol.

but once you get to the end of the alcan hwy in delta junction there is a visitors welcome center and a old log home thats a museam. I dont know if it will be open for the season yet but its a pretty cool place to stop. If its a place you want to stop and stay there is a bed and breakfast thats about a 1/8 of a mile back on the alcan highway on the left. Delta Junction Alaska -- Diamond Willow Inn ~ Your home away from home Sherry and Gordon are the owners and are great people. I also know a guy that drives a 18wheeler up the dalton hwy that lives in fairbanks if you decide to drive up that way.

I hear you on "buy it in alaska". The problem is not where I am, it's where I'm from. Basically no one wants to sell to a new yorker because ny is such a socialist hellhole of regulations. I had a remington 870 magnum, which is what got stolen. 24 inch rifled barrel, sites, I was putting nice groupings together with slugs. I figure if the bear wouldn't stop at that, he wouldn't stop at all.

The camping outside without one comment is why I'm nervous. Anyone been in my situatoin, I'm all ears.

By the way - I'm east of eugene oregon. Beautiful country. I flooded my carb this morning, so I decided to pull into breakfast and let it dry out. Got a 4 inch screw through my tire in the parking lot. I shoulda just sprayed some wd40 in the dist, that's what ended up working anyway.

I had the canadian form filled out and ready to go, along with my hard earned $25. It didn't seem like too draconian of a situation.
