I live in Wyoming, lived here 36 yrs.
I am going to paint the house this summer and will need a airless sprayer to do the job. My question is does anyone have info on a good one. Years ago I used a wagner paint gun and it was a pile! Any help would be appreciated.

Graco Ultra Max 695 high boy. However I don't think you want to spend $2000 for a spray rig.

The questions to ask yourself,

First: How big is the house/area to be painted. Will it take me just as long to brush & roller it out as it would to set up a spray rig, spray it and clean the equip?
My 695 with 100' of line takes a minimum of 45-60minutes to properly break it down flush, clean, & relube it.
Also how many coats are you planning? Usually I will do one good primer coat and two top coats, making sure to back roller the final.

Second: What type of siding? Wood-v-stucco makes a big differnece. Wood prep is much more labor intensive than a power wash to stucco. Plus wood will require a little heavier primer than a repaint of exsisting stucco. i.e. prep is greater with wood....

Third: Because no matter the paint job the prep work is everything to it lasting the next 15-20yrs do I have (and want to spend) the time to do it right-v-finding a good painting contractor to do it?

These are a few questions you might consider. This I will say. You do get what you pay for in a painting job.

Don't forget you can rent spray rigs from Hertz, United & often the mom & pops too. No reason to buy a new unit for 500, if you can rent one for a weekend for 200.

a smaller graco would do the job well, a 390 or 395 and up here in canada new they're $1000 canadian, but to buy one, put 20 gallons through it and sell it you could get a good chunk of your dough back, especially at this time of year when every painter is busy

You sound like you know wtf you are talking about. I would agree with you 90%. I think he could go down to a 595 graco and be fine.

He should think about renting a decent powerwasher as well. As far as brushing and rolling, I always say work smarter, not harder, so rent the stuff if you don't want it.

I just painted a decent sized house with a spray gun...can't remember what it was called, but rented it from a local paint store. It was old, but worked great. Pressure washed the house to get all of the loose stuff off, and then went to town. Was able to get the whole thing done in just 2 days.

Just be carefull that it isn't too windy when you're painting and you don't have a car parked downwind. Heard of some people misting their cars along with their house.

I have the Spraytech EP2105 and love it. It will spray anything your going to use interior and exterior on a home. Mine has worked flawlessly for years. This is where I bought mine. Very hard to beat their prices. The EP2105 has been replaced by the EPX2155. It retails for $1180 but they sell it for $668. You won't be disappointed.

The average homeowner doesn't need a 695,595 or even 495...if they are just going to paint the average size home, or paint weekly (not daily).

The Graco 190 or 210 ES will do the job just fine. The 210 will pump .47 gpm at 3000 psi and support a .021 tip.

Most primers and exterior paints will need a .15-.17 tip (some a .19).

So even with tip wear (which won't happen on just one job) he'd be good to go with the 210 using up to a .19 tip.

Alternatively, he can find good used Titan 440i units on ebay all the time. They are another very good unit...and if bought new, have a much better warranty than the lower end Graco's.

Graco is my first pick..though.

I agree on not needing a bigger rig, but I would recommend shopping at the paint store...

You can get the Graco 395 or Titan 440 for about the same price and often cheaper than Home Depot prices the 210 ES. They're built for the professional user and replacement parts are easier to come by.

Agreed. Even better... is to select one of the many vendors on Ebay.

A new 210 (shipped) can be had for under $700.00 the 395 and 440 will run about $800.00

Home Depot or Lowe's do not have good pricing on airless rigs.

much difference between the 390 and 395? i need to get something to do light duty around the house.

I've never seen a 390, but from the specs on the web it doesn't look too different from the 395. What is the $$ difference, if any?

decided on the graco magnum xr7 system for my needs, will let all know how it works out once i get it, i am ready to practice before painting my doors that are waiting to be installed

It is hard to beat a Graco airless sprayer and I usually rent one for big jobs. However, a friend at work gave me a "broken" cheapo Wagner airless, so I gave it a try. I think these retail for less than $200. It had a dirty outlet check valve and after I cleaned off the dried latex, I proceeded to spray my entire house with it (primer and top coat). I also lent it to a neighbor to spray his fence with. One issue with the cheap airless like the Wagner is that it lacks a swivel in the hose-gun connection, but for $75, I could have bought one if I felt it was that important. It uses the same Graco tips that I had to buy for the rental units. YMMV

finally got around to prepping and painting my doors and the graco magnum xr7 i bought did a fantastic job. doors look like glass. didnt really practice too much either, but i did spend a lot of time on the prep to make sure the actual spraying would be perfect. sprayed with SW promar 200 oil.
