Have a '99, no lift, and not sure if springs + shocks are original or not but love the ride. Soft but yet corners well. No sag under normal use.

Recently went glamping with a LOT of heavy gear and the back sagged. Am also looking to tow our lighter boat <3500 lbs.

I'm familiar with the Airlift airbags as I have them on our minivan and suburban for towing but not the biggest fan so I'm not looking to add them to our LC.

When we were little, our dad had air shocks on his beastly Ford Granada for towing our boat and camper. Had a schrader valve in the trunk and he could raise and lower the rear as needed.

I would like to have something similar but worried it would change the great ride we have. Also wondering if it would change the light offroading abilities we do?

I tried to search as I figured this had been covered but it only brought up the auto air shocks of the newer models. Checking to see if anyone has used air shocks and their experience with them on these earlier years?

You keep saying air shocks, do you mean hydraulic? LX470 and some later model Land Cruisers came with hydraulic (AHC) suspensions that could raise/lower/level the suspension. They don't have a super high load capacity though and when overloaded will go into low mode as a fail safe. Plenty of guys in your position have air bags in the rear to help with leveling when towing heavy. You don't really go into why you don't want that, but I assume it's the easiest/cheapest option for you.

Yes, I mean air shocks and not hydraulic. Similar to what Sequoias have.
