Hey everyone,

I punted and went for an aftermarket power steering pump, I believe it was O’Reilly auto parts, and it didn’t come with a filler neck, so I had to swap the filler neck from my OEM pump onto that one. The kit came with two different sizes of O-rings, and for whatever reason it only looked like the larger O-ring was needed but now I have a leak right there at the bolt which is a 12 mm, that holds in that filler neck onto the pump.

Do I need an O-ring on that 12 mm bolt also?

That’s the only place I feel like it is leaking from and I feel like an idiot for not using the O-ring there.

Any help is appreciated,

Thanks,

thanks. I have looked at that diagram, and have the O-ring already in place at the suction port union. There were 2 O-rings that came with my pump, and I don't know why they had 2 in the kit. The larger one fit the suction port union, and the smaller one seemingly had no home, but now that I have a leak (coming from that suction port union bolt area, I was wondering if that is where the smaller O-ring needs to be....

Hmmm

I believe on the OEM pump, that bolt hole is blind. If the bolt hole on the aftermarket pump goes through, then there's your answer.

Here’s the photo of the area, and it is actually still leaking even after putting the O-ring with that bolt. I have a feeling that the suction port Union is possibly not seated

So I pulled off the suction port union and the o-ring had slid down to the bottom. Is it supposed to ride towards the top there? If so that was my problem. Also, the ear that holds it to the pump was bent out ever so slightly, which would prevent the 12mm bolt from holing the suction port union against the pump flush

Thoughts?

The old o ring is still on there (assuming that's how it was assembled). I think the new oring (the one nearer to the flange) is too big. It looks like the original is still proud of the groove on the tube. You might try taking the newer one off and re assemble.

Is the o-ring supposed to be in the middle where the groove is?

Thx!

yes

The smaller O-ring that came with the replacement pump may be the correct size and as mentioned above it should fit very snugly in the middle groove, but first take a small curved tip pick and remove the old flattened O-ring. Lubricate the new O-ring with ATF before sliding it on the pipe.

To be sure you could order the correct O-ring (90301-11016) from your local Toyota dealer. There is no O-ring under the short bolt. That bolt is something else you could consider replacing as a new OEM bolt comes with a new lock washer attached. (edit: check with your local Toyota dealer, looks like
the part number has been superceded at least once)

The mounting tab of the suction port pipe should not be bent, either try to flatten it or buy a replacement

@Kernal thanks and this is great information. I got a multi-pack assortment of o-rings at Auto Zone and the tighter one definitely feels correct. Not sure why they included a larger one in the power steering pump box, and having 2 definitely confused me. I will try and bend back the mounting tab and see if that helps, as I feel that could be contributing to the leak at this point.

thanks everyone, I will get back at it today and see if I can tidy this up. My driveway will thank me

so I removed the piece, bent it a little bit, and the dang thing is still leaking right there.

It seems like there is an O-ring already in place but it is almost impossible to remove. It seems like it’s made out of metal.

Never mind, I got it off, the original O-ring was just so brittle. It felt hard as a rock. I’m going to replace it now and see if that makes a difference that was probably the problem.

Fixed! It was the original O-ring that for some reason I didn’t see you right there because I’m basically blind, lol.

Put a new O-ring on, works like a champ.

Now I just need to clean up my driveway. It looks like an episode on Halloween.

Nice....ready for GSMTR now!

Well, it was fixed yesterday, I was so triumphant, loaded my rig with sticks and branches, went to the dump, came back, no leaks, this morning there is a puddle in the driveway.

WTF

I think I’m just going to order these parts and be done with it. This slow drip from the suction port union is likely from an uneven surface on mine.

Thoughts?

One thing to consider is whether the replacement pump housing itself is the problem ie: if that port was damaged
somehow during the cleaning (?hot tank) and rebuilding process it might never seal up??

One known issue with rebuilt pumps is that an original factory installed aluminum hole plug can become loosened which then later blows out.
