After heavy rain on highway speedometer and kilometer counter dead

Hello,

Just drove into a beautiful storm on the highway in South of Spain. When the rain stopped I realized my speedometer and kilometer counter stopped too.

Where should I start to look?
Is this a classic trouble?

I don't know what year Troopy you have.
On my '88 BJ74 I know the speedo and km counter are driven by a spinning cable that runs from behind the speedo to the transmission.
On an old truck like mine, I would NOT be looking for any kind of electrical problem caused by rain.

I am wrong sometimes though.

On my old MG I disconnected the cable from the speedo and held the cable while letting the car drift down hill a little.
That let me confirm that the transmission end was making the cable spin.

Check towards the rear of your gearbox or trans for the far end of the cable.

I think your 99 will have a electronic speedometer so check the sensor.

The only place would be eBay and gumtree Australia as you won’t get them from Toyota. The guy I brought them from was getting from Toyota but he told them no manual no new landcruiser.
I brought 16 manuals from him from 1984 to 1999.

Hello hello,

I finally tried to repair the speedometer. The diagnostic was that the cable was fine and that the toothed wheel wasn't moving anymore.
Took it out and received 2L of transfer case oil on the face (I am a total noob, but learning every day a bit more).

The wheel is dead and has a lot of big metal shavings in between the teeth and the oil looks more like liquid metallic paint

My two questions :
1. What's my next move?
2. How come I get 2L of transfer case oil on the face? Isn't the filling hole at the same height? Or is the oil coming from the gear box?

@Gregol , Just buy a new plastic gear. You will be back in business in no time.
Since you are under there, drain your cased and re-fill with 90 weight oil.
Just don't over fill it.

"Gear Sub Assembly, Speedometer Driven" is the nomenclature.

Group should be: 33403

I think they run about $25.00 bucks.

The extra oil is likely coming from the gearbox. Check the level .
