Hi all,

I have a new GRJ78 (2024 model, GCC Spec from Dubai) currently functioning as a paperweight after a headlight assembly swap.
Yesterday, I installed a pair of LED assemblies to replace the OEM halogens. I did not disconnect the battery - pretty stupid, i know.

Lights do function, however:
When you turn the key to ON almost all dash lights will come on (traction control, ABS, brake system, engine management, oil pressure). The clock does not turn on, radio can not be turned on, power windows and mirrors are also disabled. When you try to crank the engine it does not do anything. No relay, no flickering of lights, absolutely nothing.
Battery sits at 12.6v, so unlikely culprit. Checked most fuses (lights, radio, ECU, ignition, dome, horn, and some others), but did not find any burned out fuses. Swapped the OEM headlight assemblies back in, no change.

My guess is that the car may have gone into some sort of security mode?
I did try to do a soft ECU reset, having the car sit with the battery disconnected for 30 min.
Also tried having it sit with the key in the ignition for 15 min. Hoping that would reset the immobilizer/ECU.
There is no engine immobilizer light on in the dash (not sure whether this spec 70 series even has an immobilizer light or function at all).

Hoping someone here might have a good idea or any pointers.
All help is welcome!

Leave the OEM headlight assemblies installed and take it to a Toyota dealer under warranty.

Otherwise you will need to get your hands on a FSM with electrical diagrams so you can go through the starting circuit and check everything. If it is like most starting circuits, you will not likely have a fuse, but a fusible link, ignition and starter relays, neutral or park/clutch switch to check. Best of luck!

Well, that is the issue: It's a grey import into Europe, so there is no dealer support available 😅 I've checked the fusible links (at this point I've also taken out and inspected every fuse for good measure), but to no avail. I was hoping some guru might know the almighty reset sequence or whether I should go to the store to get an OBD-II scanner to manually erase any fault codes.

Ah, I see. This will certainly make things more interesting. There will not be many people who have any experience with this newer model on this side of the pond, so hopefully there are some folks with some experience with a newer model read this that might know what the issue is, if this is some kind of immobilizer thing or what have you.

If nothing else, you will make most of us jealous that you are even able to import one of these!! 😜

I will post an update when I get my hands on an OBD reading and error code. Haha, I'm aware of the very happy privilege I get to enjoy with this truck. So far it has been absolutely amazing 😎 just gotta get this minor thing sorted haha

My bet would be fusible link... But you checked that?
Who imported the rig for you? Maybe they can help?
Other than that I suggest to post the question in the German Buschtaxi.net forum.
You might also contact any of the German grey importers: Toms Fahrzeugtechnik, Nestle, Autohaus Ding = TD Experience.
Good Luck Ralf

I did a visual inspection, will do a continuity test tomorrow. Hoping that is going to be it.
Buschtaxi was my next stop haha, together with contacting the company where I bought the truck.

Hello,

From your description, it appears that your truck has an anti-theft device.

70 Series engine ECU is wired in such a way that it is the last component to burn in case of an electrical problem. On the other hand, newer models' fusible links setup is different from what it used to be.

It is possible that the immobilizer ECU misinterpreted the current flow from your installation as a theft attempt and blocked every major system.

It may be necessary to reset (read: hard reset) your immobilizer ECU. If it is a factory setup, maybe a dealer can help.

In older trucks it was possible to disconnect this system (provided you knew where to look) and keep going. On newer models, it is a bit more complicated.
