AFR gauge, need wideband O2?

Wanting to start fiddling with the FI system and try to get as much as I can out of my 80 (and possibly install a NOS system). Question is, do I need wideband O2 sensors? I just want a basic gauge to tune by, and I don't want/need/think I can use a full engine management system, nor do I want to spend a s***-ton of money.
 
Yes, to tune the right way you will need a wideband. A regular band is only gonna fluctuate btwn lean and rich, lean and rich. Now, when it is in WOT and you're seeing lean you'll know you need more fuel but, no matter how you analyze it, the wideband is simply a much better tuning tool than a regular band. HTH. :cheers:
 
Should I replace my stock O2s with widebands and tap into them for the ECU or should I add an extra wideband down stream after the Y solely for the gauge?
 
+1 on the wideband. Put a new bung in the y-pipe to read from both banks of cylinders and leave your stock O2s alone. On my 3FE I have a dual entry/dual exit cat with an O2 bung right at the entry so it has the same effect as putting it in the y. I use an Innovate LM-1 (they have new models out now). This is really good for occassional serious use as it will calibrate to open air as well as datalog the AFR and, with the LM-2 add-on, up to 5 additional 0-5v sources and RPM (so you can log AFR, RPMs, AFM and TPS to really capture the exact conditions that caused a lean/rich spot). It has drawbacks as a permanent mount because the box is large. If you just want a permanent mount I believe Autometer makes a reasonable guage for a wideband sensor. FAST is another option (FAST SINGLE / DUAL SENSOR AIR / FUEL METER). This one can handle one or two wideband sensors if you wanted to monitor each bank of cylinders.
 
That's part of the plan for sure, I want the gauge to get a base-line. I'm also considering larger injectors for a dry-shot of NOS, but we'll see...haven't fully developed the plan of action yet.
 
I have and I haven't, I'm trying to find more to read on about this. But there is little done/known about the 3FE and its FI systems. That or it's hard to find/poorly documented.
 
If you're planning NOS you will need some form of auxilliary fuel control/ supply. Fatter injectors will be impossible to control at idle and across the entire fuel map (with the factory ecu alone). A wideband setup w/ software for under $200 is an absolute no brainer unless your just interested in a light show.

Also, go for a home grown forced induction setup as oppossed to Nitrous; I really don't see any benefit of NoS unless your using it all the time.

Innovate Motorsports makes an affordable WB02 sensor/guage setup. I have one in my turbo setup.

Don't you think nitrous on an FJZ80 is a little ridiculous?

I have a place that will clean/rebuild/flow your injectors for around $80 shipped. Chuck Leeper with Cody Motorsports in GA has always treated me right.

I'm running stock injectors/pump etc and making around 350hp with a GT35R ball bearing turbo setup and 8psi. Unless you spray more than a 100hp shot I think the stock stuff is fine. A wet shot would be preferred after the MAF sensor IMO. Just install the right jets and tap the fuel line from the service port at the end of the fuel rail (schraeder valve)
