Affordable hydraulic hose crimper

A search revealed info on an A/C line crimping tool but that tool may not be able to compress hyd hose ferrules. Does anyone own a hyd hose crimper? I'm thinking it'd require an external hydro pump, maybe 4ton or 8ton. I have a 4T porta power that I was hoping to attach to a crimping/swage tool.

When I was a considering adding a crimper I went to hydraulic fitting wholesaler and spoke with them about an account and crimper options. They explained to me they'd let me indefinitely borrow a basic crimper if I bought $5k of fittings and spent atleast a few grand a year on fittings. Fittings are cheap, that's a lot of fittings! I explained what I wanted to use it for- Crimping lots of different fittings and swaging parts. They explained I would be much happier with a crimp-to-diameter machine, not a crimp-to-stop machine as those are dedicated to one make of fitting normally. Like a Gates crimper crimps gates, Parker crimps Parker, etc.

After some time I found a nice used Aeroquip programmable crimper for a decent price on craigslist. I don't use it very often, but enough not to sell it.

I've seen portable crimpers that use hand pumps. They weren't like that to save cost, they were portable. To crimp hoses in the field.

You should be able to buy a used name brand crimper under $1000 without much trouble. Keep in mind the machines that just smash the ram into a selectable stop plate are a bad choice if you want to crimp fittings that aren't name brand. Every manufacturer has their own crimp diameter specs.

That's just a dimple crimper for AC lines.

Hydraulic crimp fittings are totally different. You are collapsing the entire steel shell. Magnitude more tonnage required.

ok, thanks for the clarification. The title says hydraulic fitting but it looks just like an A/C hose crimper.

My immediate need is to do some crimping on a high pressure fuel hose on the DD. Since it's a Mercedes car, I'll need to measure the OD of the hose then buy some metric steel/brass crimps.

I'm rarely one to dissuade someone from buying a tool but wouldn't it be a lot cheaper to either buy the hose or have someone make it for you?

I had a lengthy discussion with the head dude at the hydraulic shop where I took the fuel hose to, and he also said something similar. He says they really don't charge a whole bunch of money for the service, really they make money selling equipment, and supplies to other businesses. I walked away thinking that he is right, doesn't make sense to have dies, expensive crimper, etc when I can have these guys make up all of my A/C hoses, hydraulic hoses for the tractor, and what not.


I'll stop looking for used crimping machines on Facebook and craigslist

Don't ever let anyone tell you that you shouldn't buy a tool. Especially one that would come in handy for me to use.
