Advise Please? on Land Cruiser 1991, 70 Series, FJ73, 6 Cylinder, 3F engine 24 valve

hi all,

I'm new to ih8mud.com and also to TOYOTA 4x4 world! so your advise will be highly appreciated.

I just bought my FJ project car, which is Toyota Land Cruiser, Model: 1991, FJ73LV-MNV, Transmission is a 5 speed manual, 70 Series, FJ 73, 6 Cylinder 3F engine and 12 valve, 2 doors with soft top.

The car is OK but my first step is to work on the car fluids and major service, then ordering "ARB" accessories and at later stage a new car paint.

I have noted that the first owner replaced the engine and the choke doesn't work or move! my question, assume that the replaced engine doesn't require that choke, any idea?

What else you want me to pay attention to it? what I have to check? replace? in that specific model, your advise will be appreciated,

update: so far we detected few issues maybe with the carburetor and maybe some fuel pump issues, also the car it doesn't turn-on very easily! it toke time during the cold weather .. as Siglo mentioned below, there is a sound with the gear, we will do some further gear checks next week ..

Note: qoute edited to have the right information after the comments, sorry im new to this area :)

thanks
Abdulrahman

sweet truck - looks like an FJ73 to me (from the label on the back). BJ's are diesels.

you're going to be asked to post a picture of your engine, as the 3F is a straight-6 and not a V6 motor.

does that have the rear bench seat (for 3 people) and no roll bar? does it have just lap belts in the rear in that case?

looking forward to more photos.

Thanks a lot "american psycho" .. I have modified my quote. You are right it is not diesel and i'm not sure if it is V engine or straight ..

It has complete rear seats, not jump seats. I will get back to you very soon with engine pictures and other details.

thank you for your good comments,
Abdulrahman

the "choke" thingy is actually a throttle lock, it should simply be a cable that goes to the throttle linkage behind/above the accelerator pedal. handy for diesel engine starting/warming in cold weather. also for pto driven winch. you have neither diesel, nor -30 temperatures, nor pto winch, so i wouldn't worry about it.

nice unit by the way

Hi All:

Greetings Hamany, welcome to MUD! :)

Nice looking FJ73!

Do you have the service manual for this truck? The factory Toyota (or Australian Gregorys) manuals are excellent and will tell you what needs to be serviced on a regular basis.

Good luck!

Alan

Ummm. 32 valves??? Does it have a V8?

Valves per cylinder, my friend.

4 cylinder would be a 16 valve, at best.

6 cylinder would be a 24 valve, at best.

8 cylinder would be a 32 valve, at best.

I've never heard of a motor with more than 4 valves per cylinder. And, 32 isn't divisible by 6. The 3F is 2 valves per cylinder (straight 6), or a 12 valve engine. Modern v6 motors are 4 valves per cylinder.

So, do you have a v8 in it? That would be killer. Pics will help.

Welcome to Mud Hamany :D

I got to drive the car yesterday for a couple of minutes and for it's age it seemed in good condition. I am not very familiar with the 70 series, so I refered Hamany to you guys.

I did glanced at the engine, it is the straight 6 cylinder 3F. Transmission is a 5 speed manual. I don't know about the valves though. The only thing I noticed is a distinctive relatively loud metal clunk when shifting and over pressing the accelerator. I don't know if that is normal, but if you time your shifts differently, it goes away. The engine was dead cold when I drove it so I don't know if the clunk would go away when it's warmer. There was also noticeable play in the speedometer, shouldn't be too hard to fix.

@american psycho
The rear seat is a forward facing 3 person bench and I noticed a bar between the front and rear seats. Not very beefy but it looked like a roll bar. I didn't notice the belts though, maybe Hamany can verify when he takes delivery of the cruiser.

@1tontoy
It must be 24 valves then according to the sticker one of the previous owners stuck on the back of it :)

Actually, there are a few 5 valves per cylinder motors out there but definitely none you'd ever find in a Land Cruiser. Bugatti, Ferrari and Audi have made them.

Hello,

Nice FJ73 you got. Lucky you, I have not been able to find one in decent shape so far.

There is a 24 VALVE badge on the rear door. The engine, however, looks like a 3F.

I think the previous owner got the badge from a 1FZ-powered Land Cruiser and fitted it to this one.

x2 on what Chang-kuao-lo said about the "choke."

Thanks for the feedback, I’m happy to see it.

Yes, it is in decent shape and i will work on it with ARB accessories and you will see the outcome in few months :)

Actually it is "3F" engine, so i assume it is 12 valve? .. this weekend i will work on its fluids and some gear/ mechanical issues, i dont have time during the week days ...

Hello,

Yes, it is a 4.0 L 3F engine. Properly tuned, it runs well and is quite unstoppable. And it is 12 valve, carbureted.

There should be a label with carburetor tuning data on the head.

Enjoy your build.
