Hey everyone, I have an 03 LX470 w/ 114k and 18" stock wheels. The wheels have "bubbles" and in many spots are peeling. The truck is completely stock and I don't do any offroading or anything like that. Not looking to "waste" money on bling bling wheels - just want something that's cleaner than what I have. In my area, I can get the wheels refinished for like $600 for all 4.

Any advice on what to do? Should I get mine refinished or do we have a supplier w/ a set of "clean" used oem wheels. I appreciate any direction you can give a novice.

Thanks to all who answer.

If you aint in a hurry they pop up on CL time to time.

If you don't want to drop a bunch of cash on new wheels, think about fixing them up yourself. I just sanded and spray painted a set of stock 2000 Land Cruiser wheels myself for about $20 in total supplies. They look just about as good as they would have from a professional paint shop and it was a pretty simple job.

I've taken too many items to powdercoating places and ended up having them rust/peel in a year or so.... Now I just take on the smaller size projects myself.

Good Luck!

What kind of paint did you use? I’m in the same boat as OP with bubbled stock wheels. Did you primer them before painting?

I used this paint (Rust-Oleum Automotive High Performance Steel Wheel Spray Paint), but I bought it at Lowes: Rust-Oleum Automotive 11 oz. High Performance Steel Wheel Spray Paint (6-Pack)-248927 - The Home Depot

There is actually a good pic on that Home Depot site link showing some Toyota wheels someone else decided to paint. I hadn't seen that until searching for a link to share this morning. I will try to find my before/after photos to post.

I did not use any primer before painting the wheels, but I didn't have any bubbling/peeling issues. I just had rust bloom and bleed through occurring on my wheels. I did hand sand my wheels prior to applying the paint, first with a 200 grit sandpaper and then with a 1000 grit I believe. I'm sure you will have a longer coating life if you apply their primer before the spray paint. I think the accompanying primer was on the shelf right next to this product.

Hopefully you are happy with the results if you end up going down this path.

Have a good one!

I gotta say - the pics here and on the HD website are really inspiring. Makes me just want to do it myself.

DIY all the way!

Prior to the Land Cruiser, I had an FJ Cruiser for about 4 years. I painted the OE black wheels with Duplicolor wheel paint - found a color almost identical to the Toyota Ti Silver. That paint held up extremely well. The only touch-ups were after kissing rocks on the trail.

Check classifieds. I have a set of wheels for sale there.

I picked up a set of 2018 20" Tundra wheels/tires for $900. They were brand new pull-offs with maybe 50 miles on them. And then sold my stock wheels/tires to get a few hundred back. That might be worth a shot, they come up for sale around here all the time.
