Advice on frame rust (1 Viewer)

Hello, I am new here and have recently become infatuated with the GX470.

I went to look at an '04 this weekend and it looked pretty great. It did need some work, but was overall in good shape.

However, I was taking a look underneath, and while most of the underside was pretty clean, there was some heavy rust on the passenger side frame rail. I wanted to reach out here and see what people thought. Should I keep looking, or is this somewhat typical? I stuck my fingers though the holes and could definitely feel some rust on the inside of the rails too.

The seller said he'd hold it for me overnight, but he did have some other interested parties.

agree with the pass... plenty of non rusty GX's out there.. no reason to settle with one that has that much rust which will only get worse.

When push comes to shove, you gotta do what you love... even if it's not a good idea.

I've seen worse, but there are enough out there without rust that I would hold off.

I got mine in San Antonio and drove it back to Portland. It was a great experience. There's tons of options out there once you broaden your search area.

Something to look out for: Shortly after purchasing my 2008, I noticed that the AC condensate drain tube was dripping water on the top of the passenger side rail. Water was running into the rail and toward the rear until it dripped out one of the holes in the frame. Only very minor rust, but before it got worse I solved the problem by using a length of tubing to extend the condensate drip point to just below the rail.

Got a few questions for you if you don't mind... We have a 2003 GX470, got it used a couple years ago, 200K miles. Husband has been working on it himself most of the time. Took it in for the dealer to fix the brakes. When they put it up, they may have had the lift points wrong? Not sure, but it is totally rusted in the right rear -- bad! So much so they said we shouldn't drive it, could collapse. We put a call into Lexus, they will call us back with a case manager tomorrow. Sucks to be us. What recourse do we have? Also, no coincidence, but he was rear-ended about 6 months ago -- probably didn't help the frame. Thanks!

wow @Being There ... honestly, that's pretty scary. keep us updated on what toyota/lexus says... i suspect there's not much recourse.
