hi guys,

i m planning to upgrade my lj70 with volvo 303 portal axles .... anyone dyd this upgrade ? i could use some infos / advice ....

thank you

Good choice!

I have some Volvo portal axles that I am going to put under my HZJ78 Troopcarrier.

I am going through some dramas to get the correct axles though, as the seller sent me 7.10:1 ratio axles from a 6x6 C304 Volvo, rather than 5.99:1 ratio axles from a 4x4 C303 Volvo, and then refused to accept that he sent the incorrect axles. Along with the incorrect ratio, the 6x6 rear axle has a different offset (more centred) diff centre to the 4x4 C303 rear axle. Hopefully that will be sorted in the next couple of months and I can get on with the build.

I have seen photos of Volvo portal axles under a SWB 70 series cruiser on the net somewhere, not sure if they were under an LJ70 or a heavy duty SWB 70 series though, I'll see what I can dig up from the photos I saved.

What sort of info and advice are you after, I can help with what I have found out in preparation for my build.

thank you Simon

i think the biggest trouble will be with the steering links .....
there i need picture / advice ....

i m planning to use the original suspension and also a disk brake conversion

i m from Bucharest, Romania

my lj70 is RHD
the portal axles are about to come from Sweden , just oredered them last week

So your LJ70 is RHD, and your portal axles will most probably be LHD.

You would need to source a RHD Volvo tie rod/steering link and somehow hook that up to your steering pitman arm, or have a custom RHD tie rod/steering link made up for it.

I am trying to source a RHD Volvo tie rod/steering link for myself from Malaysia, but am not finding any easily.

There is someone I know in the UK that has been talking about making up some custom RHD Volvo tie rods/steering links, for his own RHD truck over there, and he said he might make one for my truck, but he is not committing to when he will be able to do it, and it doesn't sound like he will get to making them very soon. I think that his solution would use more easy to find tie rod ends, that would need the tie rod socket on the axles drilled out to suit the tie rod ends. Apparently the Volvo tie rod sockets on the axles, and tie rod ends, have an unusual taper to them, but that is just what I have been told.

I found some photos of Volvo portal axles under a SWB cruiser a while ago, after a lot of Google searching, not sure where I found them, these are under a LHD light duty SWB cruiser...

And a heavy duty MWB cruiser...

And some other sort of heavy duty cruiser...

So they have been put under a few different cruisers that I have seen on various web sites and forums, and no doubt more that have not been put up on the web, or that I have found in my searches.

You might also need to sort out a new hand brake, depending on whether the disc brake conversion for the Volvo portal axles includes a handbrake, if not then you might need a transfer case mounted hand brake.

Try searching Volvo Portals on the 80s site and you will come up with several good threads. The link below may offer some info. Under a leaf sprung 70 series I would think the install would be much simpler than on a coil sprung 80 series.

Would be a nice axle under my 79 series build using a 62 series frame, 3FE and 4-speed. How much were the axles from Sweden?

LJ70 is coils all round, no leaves.

VOlvo from factory uses a LR transmission handbrake on the long shaft. Yes you will have to sort out a handbrake.

We use LC II front DISCS and Pajero Discs on rear here.

I will send pics of my Volvo's front axle setup so you can see it. However it is setup for FOrward cab control.

VOlvo from factory uses a LR transmission handbrake on the long shaft and it is very effective better than a YOTA handbrake. Yes you will have to sort out a handbrake.

Can you tell me what heavy duty series is on lj70?
Some pictures will be ok.
I`m interesting in doing something about front axle specially.

i am hot to trot for a set of those simex tires. I hear they will last like 20,000 kms if there as daily driver tire.... If not less.

You dont use simex XT for daily driving. Keep them as a second set. For daily driving use a set of A/T or even M/T.

they are definately not a daily driver tyre!! Though if you did I reckon you could get 20,000km out of them.

Being bias they handle onroad crap and get flat spots overnight.
