So much for for ingenuity. Apparently were not just under the Intellectual/Design Copyright attack from the Chinese anymore. This one comes from our own great state of California.

I don't think the design could be more of a duplicate if they were built side by side.

I don't know who the gentleman in the picture is or if he has any affiliation with the trailer company. I do think it's a shameful reproduction of an Adventure Trailers Horizon trailer.

Here's a picture of the original.

And here's one of the copycat.

Do you know if he built it himself, from the pics... I would say it IS an adventure trailer. Bummer, but if you are going to copy (for your own use, not resale) AT is the one to copy. Now, profiting from their effort is something different all together. I hope AT pursues them pretty hard for copying.

Me too. It's funny, I posted the same thread somewhere else and it got modded off the page due to a reply.

It's just a shame.

If I remember correctly, that looks like the setup at the FJ Cruiser Summit in Ouray, and I am not sure if it was for resale. I wasn't there for the summit, but passing through and happened to see it.

trailer

They didn't copy the frame or the suspension and when it comes to putting a box on frame, I think quite a few of the trailers look the same. I did a search and could not find the site, you got web address? How did you get your hands on the photo's

Lou

Yep, I agree....big Meh. :meh:

Do a search for Australian/South African trailers and you'd say the same about AT.

Thanks for the info, not sure why 24hrs has his shorts in a knot. It appears the only thing he copied are the side boxes. Thats a great looking trailer, any idea about the price?
Reading the link this guy is not building them to feed the family. He indicated using the Torsen system for 15 years, so he must make other trailers.

Lou

He has a website pending, it is not open yet for any information.
It does look like a very nice trailer.

I gotta get some type of trailer after I move to a place with a garage, then my roof top tent will come off of the FJ and go to the trailer.

Looks good go me as well. In the thread over at Expedition Portal it sounded like the few trailers this guy built were half the price of an AT.

It's clear if you look at the pic's that there are many things different about this trailer than the AT. If someone has something innovative they should patent it. I see nothing wrong with taking cues from a design that is in the public domain. It is just as easy to say that the Adventure Trailer is a ripoff as there are many other companies that have made similar trailers for a long time.

If this guy can make a quality trailer that is considerably cheaper than an AT he will sell more than he can make. It won't matter if current AT owners are grumpy about it.

About the only thing 24hrs. is accomplishing is generating interest in these trailers. They are on my bookmark list now and I will be keeping tabs on what becomes available.

Reading through the FJCruiser forum; sounds like cabelas made him an offer for production.

how many different variations can a box on an axle really be? especially when you are trying to maximize space.

aren't those axles bad for off road use?

ps. meh a little competition never hurt anyone

Its a copy because the guy went to AT posing as a potential customer and took notes of production and construction, then as he said himself he can "build the same thing for less" while slamming AT for the prices they charge. I understand if you make a similar design,, but to actually go there and copy it is just going too far.. its not hard to come up with a good plan.. Even if he just snooped around this website for a few hrs he could have come up with enough to build one.. Check out the thread over on epedition portal on this.. like the 3rd page in there is a response from the guys at AT..

Steve

Dude . . . you're on a form dedicated to vehicles whose initial design violated copyright, whose initial name infringed on trademark, and whose engine was lifted from Chevy.

My opinion is, good for this guy:beer:. AT is WAY overpriced:bang:. The average person who is going to want this and use this cant afford it. Mabe they will have to compete:clap:. I was looking into one of these and was blown away at the prices so I have decided to make my own:wrench:. This is probibley this guys same way of thinking. Maybe sombody will make an affordable roof tent now.

as far as i can remember this is still AMERICA..................

does at have a copyright or patent on their oh so unique design.

as far as i can see they have a trade mark restriction on only their name adventure trailer.

well then this guy is well within his rights to use their design ideas to make himself or the public a trailer.

those damn trailers are so ovepriced anyway.

who cares. :meh::meh::meh:

start a thread about something that matters.

personally i like innovation and sometimes some of the BEST innovation comes from making just some small improvements on something that already exists.

and sometimes that comes at a BETER price.

i also find it amusing that TOYOTA had it displayed at the fj cruiser summit.

That is one awesome looking little trailer. If it's truely half the price of the AT's I'd be damn interested.
