So what disadvantages of haveing dual handbrakes for the rear of a 62 . I dont have a locker and think haveing the ability to operate one wheel ebrake at a time would help me greatly .Till i have money for a locker.

So whats the pros and cons
Heres what i was thinking of doing

Take a pioece of pipe maybe inch in diamter and flair both ends of it.
Disconect my rear brake lines so they dont conect together. use Them little uclamps for binding cable together and some new cable to run a line up front for the new hand brake

any oppinions?

They probably still make kits for air-cooled VWs that have a pair of short levers that mount to the ebrake handle & attach to the cables. This allows you to operate each drum separately while retaining the original ebrake operation.

These things are cheap. Check out a VW accessory/parts site.

In a specific situation maybe ... but wheeling is imposible to brake and un brake wheels and drive at time to replace a locker ( or A-trac system ) function ..

Yo Tinker-

Post #1000 and it's about VW parts! :D

I dont really think that cutting brakes are a replacement for a locker. By the time you get all the parts together and fab it all up, you have probably spent the same.

You can pick up a Lock-Rite or an Aussie for $250-$300 and install it yourself in a couple of hours.

My opinion --- don't try to reinvent the wheel.

i figure it might cost all of 30 bucks to do it. Friend mine said he might have a hand brake laying around already. The u clamps are like 75 cent a pop. 1 drill bit and 10 foot of cable.

Only reason for wanting to do this is so when one wheel in air i can lock it and make wheel with traction do the job. Also i hear it makes it easyer for makeing sharp turns.

I see nobody likes my idea. but either way if i try it i will let you all no how it worked out.

Im still considering it . Beins i dont have the 250 to 300 for the locker.

hey its your truck and you can do what you want with it. i agree with your reasoning and personally think it is a good idea.

Fair idea, not great but fair.. I suspect that you will be thinking of other things than trying to stop one tire while it is off the ground.. But there is no reason it would not work ;)

For turning, it would only really help if you have Front WD only or are doing carve turns in the sand...

Poor man lockers? I'm trying to save my pennies for lockers - anyone have recommendations that won't break the bank? Please don't say ARB air lockers, I know I can't afford that.

Suggestions based on experience would be good, this is my DD so it gets driven on and off road.

Moab convinced me lockers would be good.

$2.86

Grab some sticks and weld it up...

Done..

weld up the spider gears it will be just like a spool.

i drive this truck to where i wheel. its done been to up state newyork and to the smokey mountains in Tnn from baltimore. needs to be semi street friendly

someone around here has done cutting brakes... maybe it is someone on the lcml. In Australia or New Zealand I think. Don't recall.... shoot. Maybe Nigel Buxton?
Well.... someone did it on a 40 and was pleased with how it worked, so why not give it whirl on a 60?
I prefer a locker, but can see where cutting brakes could work, it is just that usually when I lose traction with one wheel, I don't have the coordination to play brakes, gas, clutch and also fiddle with two ebrake handles. I'm just not that coordinated.

I got the automatic. Mines a fj-62 I stick it in gear and got a fear hand to play with my self figured i give it something usefull to do,. :)

i also play video games :) nothing wrong with being a big kid!

I proposed something like this a couple of years ago before I got ARB religion - only with line locks to disable the brake on the non-spinning side. That way you could apply some real braking force to the spinning side. Nobody liked it.

I just think it would be cool to have an E brake, currently mine does not work I keep a brick under the driver seat and when needed jump out or throw it from inside under the tire.

my e brake dont work right now either. lol. One the brackets that hold the cable up is gone and it has extra slack in it. I figure when i do the dual ebrakes i will have all them issues solved.
