Has anyone added an e locker from a 99 to a later model such as an 06'? How difficult is the process. I can get a complete 3rd, actuator, wiring and relay but wanted to check before I jumped.

The earlier diffs are weaker and have a different ratio. Have you considered a harrop e-locker? these are pretty awesome @orangefj45 sells them and can install it in Stockton.

I hadn't considered that but will now. The e locker would have been a steal. I'll talk to georg

I just went through the whole elocker/ARB analysis after my recent Kane Creek Canyon experience. I chose the ARB route for a number of reasons. First and foremost is the reputation and longevity of ARB- not saying the Harrop is bad, just want to rely on a known entity, particularly when combined with the experience of Kurt and Cruiser Outfitters for the install. Second is that the difference is really multiplied by 2 since you will need to install front and rear lockers. Slee and others in the know advised me not to just install one on the front to replace the blown diff in my '06- it would put too much strain on the rear if the rear was not also locked. Third is that since I needed air to run the ARB lockers, I just went ahead and bought a twin compressor that will quickly air up tires and run air tools as well.
I really wanted to go with the Harrops but ended up with the ARB for the above reasons.
Just my 2 cents.

I knew the front diffs were different, are you saying rear diffs are different as well? What are the different ratios, when did they change?

98-02 use a weaker diff (2 pin) with a 4.3 ratio, 03+ went back to a 4.1 but was stronger (4 pin)

I did an elocker axle swap out of a 99 into an 01, that was very straight forward, haven't gotten around the wiring part yet.

Correct.

I just put a Harrop E-Locker in the front of my early 100.

The January issue of TOM should have the how-to article in it.

I guess I should be clear on this -- I could get the e-locker for about $400. Yes it's used and it sounds like the gear ratio would be different so it's not just a straight swap as I thought it might be. This changes things since I would need Georg to do the work anyways. A straight swap I could do but setting gears is beyond anything I care to accomplish.

You know how to find me Pete!

No, pretty sure it was both, but not 100% confident. maybe someone else can confirm?? @orangefj45 or @ginericLC or @beno or @sleeoffroad

Negative, 1/98 and newer... all 4 pinion rear. Front is 2 pinion to 8/99, 4 pinion later.

1/98 to 8/99

8/99 & newer

Fwiw, e-lock 80's were all 4-pinion, non e-lock are 2-pinion front & rear

To the OP, swap the gear set with your current 4.1. Only parts you would buy are an install kit. Take out 100 Series 4.1's are common enough too with folks re-gearing, you could have the diff pre-built. You will also have to mod your axle housing for the e-lock diff.

Thanks for the clarification Kurt!

That is gold Kurt @cruiseroutfit - thank you!

Follow up question - what about if I am running a '99 LX? Did all the '98 & '99 470s come w/ LSD? I cannot find much on this unfortunately. I will take your above info to determine a LSD rear diff born after 1/98 is 4 pinion. Thank you for any further wisdom you can provide!

That is a great question. Toyota epc shows that the LSD and open rear diff were both available in 1999. Whether or not they were actually ordered and shipped that way to the US I don't know bu a VIN should determine that for you. I've personally not run across an LX470 rear LSD diff. Either way every rear 100/470 diff be it open, LSD or locked is 4 pinion.
