Man, I'm dying here!

can't wait to see if this works. that way i can order mine without having to get all the stuff they package with ATRAC.

if your FJ sounds like it's dying from the inside out A-TRAC is working otherwise it's not.

Like very loud metally noise like ABS but it sounds that the T-CASe is falling appart and your pedals/shifter shake like a mother ****er.

Freakin' Eh, holy crap ! If that's how it's supposed to sound, how do I not know if I 've f***ed up my rig by installing a switch to run something that would cheat the company out of $$$$ ??

if it sounds like a metal-like much louder ABS sound then you didn't fxxx anything up. but if the truck drives normally then you didn't.

k_os description is dead on - my 4Runner with ATRAC used to scare the piss out of unexpecting passengers. Find some mud and the shuddering and noise will be unmistakeable. You will know its operating. You know you've F---ed somethign if I continues on pavement/grip.

O.k.... Good news folks...I just performed a "function test" after installing said switch this A.M. I shifted into L4 , Pushed the A-Trac button and lo and behold..........the A-Trac light came on!! Guess I had one after all. I did not hear any noise coming from up front, but it was raining pretty hard. Now, the only thing left to do is to see if it actually works. I wish I could go out and test it out now, but I've got the little ones tonight and after I put the youngest to bed, I ran out in the wind and rain to do my " function test". AArrggh, I'm so not the patient one:mad: Stand by again.............

ick

Sweet! The first tentatively probably ultimately successful test! Nice work, and also to the later poster who also had the light come on--now, the first test!

The folks at Toyota told me that they make ATRAC and the e-locker work together (normally it is one OR the other). Next test will be for someone to figure that one out.

So does this work or not!
I'm getting tired of checking this thread:D
The light don't mean much if the software ain't working.
Find a ditch and test it. Should take all of 5 minutes!

And if this is like the 4Runner system the rear locker will disengage before the a-trac enables itself.

Not really, but it's not from a lack of trying.

I've tried finding a place where 4-Low slips and that way, I'll know that (while already in 4-Low) hitting the A-TRAC switch really makes a difference.

It's not every day that you can find a place where 4-Low won't get you out of a Jam.

It's my understanding (and correct me if I'm wrong), that A-TRAC works in conjunction with ABS and activates only when (ONE) wheel slips; when this is detected, the ABS locks that wheel and redirects power to the other wheel.

Any other suggestions on the best way to test this ?

perhaps going up a loading dock? when one of the wheels lifts from the ground (in 4L w/o the diff locked), the a trac should kick in.

logic2, I'm running into the same situation. Found a good muddy, slick spot today and tried to get some spin. All I heard noise wise was a real fast "clicking" noise from somewhere up front in the dash and mud hitting the inside of the wheel wells. It was hard enough finding a mud spot in Staten Island. This will have to wait until I get back to PA. Could be that you'll find out before I do.

I think someone said something about "go flex a ditch" and see if it works....Can't find any ditches around me here.

May be that the clicking sound was a good sign ??

* also found that when you engage the rear locker, the A-Trac light does turn off *

It Works

Ok - it Works :flipoff2:

Here's the test I performed:

1.) Jacked the rear diff up and put jack stands under each rear axle. Each Rear tire was 3" off the ground.
2.) Jacked up front Passenger tire 3" off ground.
3.) Got in FJC, started, and shifted into 1st gear and SLOOOOOWLY let off clutch.
Result: All 3 tires were spinning - Front Left (Drivers Side was on ground and not grabbing.)

4.) Shifted txfer case into 4-LL, Shifted into 1st and let off clutch.
Result: Same as above - Nothing

5.) Accelerated
Result: Same as above - Nothing

6.) Shorted the Black and Pink wire (Switched A-TRAC to ON Position)
Result: A-TRAC Light lit up

7.) Shifted into 1st and let off clutch.
Result: Same as above - All 3 tires were spinning, Drivers not grabbing.

8.) Accelerated
Result: s*** - Terrible gear grinding noise and Front-Driver's Wheel Grabbed and FJC flew off Jack Stands - Woooooo-Hoooooo

I trust it now - It made a difference.

Cost of adding A-TRAC to an FJC: $1.50 for switch at Radio Shaft

Do I get a share of the winner's prize ?? F**k it, if I ever meet you, I'll buy the  .

Damn, and I spent $68.59............................

Thanks

Many Thanks to Alex and everyone else that helped out -

Whoo hoo!

Now ... if we could only buy a switch and have those roof-mounted lights install properly and come on... :D

Congratulations! This is great news!

Don't feel bad, I ordered an A-TRAC switch from Toyota Parts and they (good friend) told me it would be several weeks before I'd see it. The temporary switch will work in the mean time.

I never would have thought of it or tried it, had it not been for the activity on this thread. Everyone deserves a beer. (going to get one now)

logic2- I don't even own an FJC, but I'd like to thank you for being a "pioneer" in this ATRAC thing. Great work!
