What kind of switch is this? And what does this switch look like....from the back? Is it something that must be ordered from Toyota, or will any switch fit? You know....maybe one of those old school toggle switches could be cool....if it would fit/work.

Downer,
Some people don't like SEARCH nazis but your lack of initiative in answering your own questions ridiculous.

Post #1 in this thread describes the switch and it's purpose.
Post #59 in this thread has pics of the panel and the wiring
Post #71 in this thread describes the testing process and that a $1.50 R/S switch will work.
Post #96 has the Toyota p/n

All in the same thread where you ask your questions which tells us you didn't bother to read the thread before you hit send.

I thought that a locker was standard equipment on everything but the 2-wheel drive.
The 2 wd ones, and the auto ones were available without the rear locker. If you got the 4x4 6 speed, it was standard.

:whoops:

Guess I had a little tunnel vision since the standard was all I ever wanted. Thanx for info.

The blank-faceplate plug in the A-TRAC position (top row - 3rd from left) had the wrong connector attached (and even more confusing, it also had a pink wire and DARK PURPLE...almost black wire as well). Since it was in the correct position, I tried shorting those wires...and it didn't work. Reading the post
above about the color codes, I found that the connector I needed in the next position to the right. After shorting the two wires (black and pink), then shifting into 4-LOW, the light came on. This looks like 2 successful tests.
I'll try putting 2 car ramps under opposite-diagonal wheels in the morning and see if i can get 4-Low to slip, then see if the A-TRAC mod makes a difference.
Pics of the mod----------
Remove panel and pop out the blank plugs to find the female connector with 4 wires.

With engine running (to simulate driving) short the pink and black wires (position 3 and 4)

Shift txfer case into 4-Low and see A-TRAC light activate.

could you be so kind as to post a pic of the $1.50 switch being installed?? Please?

Also - correct me if I am wrong, but a momentary switch will OPEN or CLOSE a circuit for ONLY as long as the switch remains depressed by the user - does this mean that once the vehicle is shifted into 4L, the only thing required to activate ATRAC is a momentary open / close of a simple 2 wire circuit?? How is ATRAC deactivated using this $1.50 mod part?

In your example you show the #3and 4 wires of the atrac switch harness being shorted together continuously... then shifting into 4L. Where/How does the momentary come into play?

Thank you for any clarification.

Hello Utah Tojo:
The 2 wheel drive model does not come with the traditional type of limited slip, but uses a two wheel type of a-trac called auto limited slip. This is done with the abs system and like a-trac modulates the rear brakes to give power to the wheel that has traction. Later robbie

Thanx for the info Powderpig. They should call it a-trac lite.

No Wiring

I guess I have the anomoly of the group. I have a 4WD FJ with the rear locker, but when I popped out the dummy switch plates there is no wiring in place for the A Trac or the bass switch. I got my FJ in May of last year....anyone have any thoughts?
