nice little rig...

Not really.

Gonna factory soft top it., or just a blue tarp with some plastic duc taped inside, thinking the later is more your style

Isn't there supposed to be a question mark in there somewhere?

Or are we just doing the Victor Borge thing while typing now and assuming people know what the fawk you're on about?

Not related to Nashman are ya? :flipoff2:

Bah, that's more than I paid for the whole cruiser. Although it's cheap compared to the top for sale for $3400 in the interior.... Feel free to deliver that beer anytime. :flipoff2:

I do have a extendo fbg lid I made that's pretty much troopy dimensions out under a tree, plus extra tub flange and ht sides....it gives a person ideas, but that's waaaay more work than I want to do.

Half tempted to just cut the tub off behind the doors and throw a tray on it. Dunno. Step one is to get that piece of s*** engine pulled tho, which will begin as soon as this coffee takes hold.

I hosed it down with a homemade penetrating oil concoction yesterday, I'd like to park the truck up to it's tits in a swimming pool filled with the stuff for a month.

You always find the hottest cruisers. I'm jealous. :(

Let me know if you ever have a need for a nice 60 frame and body. I have a global entry card now, but no tow rig.

Also, wtf is up with so many clean body parts up north?? I was shocked last time I came up for a late model 40 tub (about 7 or 8/10) that is going to be swapped onto the '79 crawler.

Your troopy roof, Morb's cherry 80 frame, that fine 40... Could be Annother fine tater creation.

Yeah in a nutshell, anything works if you thin it with acetone.
I've tried atf and motor oil with some gear oil in it. gear oil has additives that help supposedly, but at least it doesn't stain like atf.

so essentially what I do, is dump some old s*** in my spray jug, thin it and go.

ain't rocket surgery despite what the chemical companies say.

Ive never understood penetrating oils, they never seem to get where they need to go. Great for exposed threads but half the time the damn bolt just shears.

Lube while penetrating is a whole different story.

I prefer a little well placed heat. Works every time. Heck if things get hot enough no lube needed.

(This post is going in two directions at once. My bad.)

So what you guys are saying is: we soak this old landcruiser up to its 'titties' in some kind of lubricant/acetone? Or we set it on fire to get rid of the rust and moss? :hmm:

'titties' :hmm:
Grunting and panting

You know, any poll question that has "soaking titties" as one of the options, really doesn't need the other options.

Now.... where was I...

I pulled out the excressence and gave the truck a power wash. It's gotta be worth at least an extra $50 without the 350 .
Things I didn't expect to find during this operation?

Functioning warn hubs (unlocked and relocked while unbolting dshafts, no crowbar required) ,factory paint on the frame in places under the undercoating that was coming off in large sheets, bolts that came apart and most shocking of all......

Mel using the word "Aqualu" before I did...

Now some pics of the scabby wreck.

the horror...

I pressure washed the dash too. Birds had been roosting on the steering wheel. At some point I'll have to bang out another set of glass fenders.

Gotta be one of the oldest sag conversions on the island at the very least. Done reasonably well. Hopefully it clears the 3b stuff.

These are almost as offensive as the engine was. At least they aren't on the front, and this guy does have the excuse of it still being 1994 :bang:

would you believe, I've never owned a set of these before? I'll need to remove them before they fall off.

Next is to cut off some of the old engine mounts. Of particular annoyance is the original 2f mounts that caused rather a lot of grief while trying to get that lump pulled.

Nice work. That thing really is not in that bad a shape at all (compared to what a lot of 40's look like that have been sitting). Given what you paid, I think you scored on that. Especially given the extras like the warn hubs, power steering etc.

Interior pics?

Do you have the papers for it so you could actually put it on the road if you wanted?

Jonathan has them still, but I'll get them. I still have the tags and papers for the original crackwhore in a drawer somewhere, so there's always that option if need be...kindof appealing to resurrect the old skank, although, this one is the same colour green, I'm probably going to end up calling it that again.

Apparently this was under a lean-to for most of the 20 years, tho judging by how much water was in the engine, I'd say that lean-to leaked a smidge.

Interior? dingy. smells bad. porous.

Fenderwells are ugly. funny tho, there's a 40 for sale in nanaimo for 5800 bucks, and it has checkerplate bolted over everything. inside and out. I'll bet it's in similar condition to this thing under all that. (dude is kinda dreaming on that price)

Pretty decent roll cage in it tho. ( this is before I washed it. Note the custom bird s***, and unlabelled vial of pills.)

But yeah, all things considered, I'm pretty happy with it. I've seen a lot worse sell for a lot more. I look forward to putting in a battery and throwing some electrons around...see what happens.

Not bad at all on the inside; especially being pre-wash. Much better than I was expecting.

Had any time to wrench on the beast?

Yes...

Enough time to bring home the dubious 3b with the worlds most ghetto turbo install....to buy an enormous cold chisel called the "rivet buster" and to effectively shatter the fxxxing thing on the 4th rivet, to take it back to the auto parts place and have them tell me "no warrantee" to which I replied with my finest BlueSteel/Magnum/Cam Eating Lemons face, and got it replaced.

And to seriously contemplate dumping this 40 in favour of something a tad less ratfxxxed...

So yeah, All good.

we'll see how I feel in a couple days about it. No big whoop either way, but I'm eyeballing a couple dirt cheap US 80's thinking it might be fun to try one with the ghetto B.

Even censoring language in one's own threads I see. Mud just went from an 8 to a 4.

Bahahaha!! Spewing coffee here!! You're hilarious man.

80 with a 3B turbo; that would be pretty cool too. Even with the rust, if your 40 had a running 3B it would increase the resale substantially; you could use the profit to put into the 80 project...?

I was impressed when i8hmud moved to the new forum software, as there was no censorship whatsoever. Looks like the good times are over now though....

X2 on being a find at that price. I'm sure you've got way more than I started with. You should build and keep a 40... :D I seem to recall you missed the Crack Whore, and couldn't sell the 80 fast enough. We all have those moments, but I don't think you really want plush recliners, A/C, ice makers, and a capuchino machine.

Use the search function if you can't remember why you broke up with your last 80... It's easy to remember the good times, it's the crappy memories only your therapist can dig up.

Sure, but that meagre profit would be eaten up by having to scrounge another 3b...I could sell the 40 for more than I paid even as it sits without too much difficulty, but meh.

Only talking about a few hundred bucks here either way, so it's not the end of the world.

I discovered a bunch of annoying crap I'd have to fix on the 40 before using it, and I'm not sure I really want to...turns out that steering system is shyte. I have a 60 setup in a box, but that's a fair bit of work.

For the 3b 80, 3b isn't the best engine for an 80 by any stretch, just cheap and easy. You can bang one into a truck in a weekend, and probably get mid 20 mpg's, it'd be slow, but an 80 only weighs a couple hundred lbs more than a 60, so not that much difference really.

I could see it being a temporary solution until a cummins or something lands in my lap.

swmbo wants a wagon, and she prefers 80's, and I prefer the 80's lack of rust...and bizarre as it is, they're also cheaper than 60's.

there's no way we could fit 2 dogs and all our s*** into a 40 for a camping weekend trip like that donner lake run.

I kinda hate the new forum. The app not working anymore is a bit of a deal killer.

I'm interested to see what you end up doing. I see where you are at; 40 was too cheap to turn down, but not really what you want or need, especially with the extra effort it is needing.

Could you put 2H running gear from a 60 into an 80? And turbo that? Although 2H doesn't seem to stand up well to boost from what I've seen.
