I'm interested to see what you end up doing. I see where you are at; 40 was too cheap to turn down, but not really what you want or need, especially with the extra effort it is needing.

Could you put 2H running gear from a 60 into an 80? And turbo that? Although 2H doesn't seem to stand up well to boost from what I've seen.
Yeah could do, I think they bolt right in, but not really any better than a 3b as far as power goes so why bother.

we'll see...talking to a guy about an 80 at the moment, its just a bad week, I can go down and look at it this weekend, but then there's the 3 day wait for customs, and I couldn't bring it home for 2 weeks because of work.

Rust free would certainly be a plus. Pulling parts off Morb's parts truck was a totally new experience after 20+ years of working on a 40. Rust free, nothing broken, clean... :D

So I've been busy in the past couple week, and have done precisely diddly-squat to the 40.

I did have a bit of a spurt of energy towards the boat tho.

(if anyone cares) a pic of why A) I haven't spent any time on cruisers in the past couple years and B) why there will be NOOOO welding in my shop anytime soon.

No this isn't enough clamps.

Centipedes aren't the only things with a lot of knees.

I like the idea of the flat deck to finish, and gives me an idea I have here in my place taking up space. I'd like it to not
be 40 deg too. So what is the deal with the sailboat? Lifelong hobby? Rescue? Finish it 5 yrs after you retire? That is what
my FJ45 is for, I don't think I'll ever get it done.

Yes to most of the questions, but finished a touch sooner than that (I'm on the "freedom 95" plan.)

Sometimes you have to build a boat...just how it is.

Glad to hear man. Hey, I gots a fan hub for you...:grinpimp:
splendid...

Boat is looking great; nice work!

never been closer....

Fished some useful hunks of metal out of my random pile...

The engine mounts I have aren't for a 3b, which caused the cheapness to take hold rather early in this procedure, so I had to make a couple modifications to get the frame brackets the right distance apart. (and by right distance, I mean, "pretty close." :hillbilly:)

It should work out , but if it doesn't, at least the frame brackets will be in the right spot so I can just buy some proper 3b mounts. Although I'd rather not, as they are 5x the price of most engine mounts, (mopar ones can be had for about $10.)

I don't really care if the engine isn't exactly where it should be stock, as long as it fits.

And the template. the sub-40 degree driveway didn't last long, so drilling the holes to bolt the brackets on will wait for tomorrow and some sharper drill bits than what I have.

Working evenings this week, so I can fxxx around with the cruiser for a few hours in the mornings while it's still coolish.

I may have to do something about this turbo mounting before I stuff the lump into the 40...The big feller ain't one for elegant solutions, if a simpler one presents itself first.

I have a spare manifold. may just have to do the ol' flip and adapter plate. May also dig my BJ60 power steering in a box out and bolt on some of that crap... We'll see...all depends on how long this puff of enthusiasm lasts...:hillbilly:

Is that a Nissan turbo? From a 300? It looks similar to what I have sitting in a box someplace

Nice to see progress. Working in this heat is certainly brutal. Rushing changing out my fan clutch last Wednesday leaning over a hot engine in the hot weather was a real nightmare. Working in the cool of the morning is smart.

If you retain that turbo manifold, at least wrap it in a bunch of fibreglass to keep the heat in. I'd do the adapter plate thing if I was you... Pretty nice that you'll be turbo right of the bat. I'd like to ride in a 3B turbo one of these days to get a feeling for the power curve compared to my 2lte.

Yeah. It's toasty.

No idea what the turbo is, quite possibly volvo as the oil inlet was a fxxxed up thread that matched nothing on earth when he installed it. volvo are good at that. Proprietary threads on some fittings.

Despite it being a lot of extra work for no gain other than cosmetics, I probably will change the manifold. It's just so fxxxin ugly....

We'll see how I make out on getting a flange cut.

Almost a month of no news? Going to bring a surprise to the meeting on the 23rd? Or did you pick up an 80? Curious....

Yeah, haven't touched it....Initially this killed one weekend...(neighbour's barn...)

and then I had a week off for the the first time in jeebus knows how long, thought I might work on it a little, but it was too damn hot out for that. Burn fingeres when touching metal. Fxxx that.

Did this instead.

Maybe there'll be a spurt of progress one of these days, but I doubt it....boat is more fun to work on...and I'm starting to eyeball the cruiser and think about the guitar I could buy instead. :meh:

Haha! That's hilarious man! Looks like you're having a good summer anyhow. Nice to see progress on the boat.

yes, the neighbour puts on a pretty good shindig every year...his place is freakin unbelievable.

I have no idea how he has time to work on the stuff he has....cuz he has a ridiculous amount of it, and it's almost all cool.

I'd still like to get that engine into the cruiser, if only to make the damn thing mobile.

It's spent enough time in my parking spot, time to move it into Mel's....

Oh very well.

It was dealing with that town full of drooling halfwits known as Prince George that exhausted me. The relentless belligerent driving style up there wears on you a little bit. You can only take so many near death experiences in a 3 hour period before it starts to harsh your mellow.

(if you're from PG and you can read this, congrats.)

Anyways long story short, picked up an hj61 with a 5speed. Little crusty around the edges, but actually less rusty than I thought it would be. Considering what a halfway decent bj60 goes for these days, I'm ok with what I paid. Doesn't have lockers, just a crappy LSD which is rather dubious.

Owners were morons, (see above re: PG) and didn't know their asses from holes in the ground. I stopped asking them questions after 2 minutes. They lived on 200+ acres, so the cruiser hadn't seen much highway in a loooooong time.

Trip home was uneventful once we were past quesnel....where I coasted to a stop in the Hospital parking lot with a toasted clutch slave...I loaded up with spares at Radd before leaving, but we both forgot about the slave...

Called all the parts places, and no one had one, marvellous predictions of "maybe tuesday" etc, meanwhile I had the slave in hand, contemplating how to haywire it together with an o-ring or something, when one parts guy says, " You should get a hold of George" aka shancerlelby.

Turns out he'd replaced the slave on his HJ60 a few months previous, and being the prince among men that he is, took it out of his truck and brough it to me. Restored some of my faith in humanity after dealing with northeners.

Depsite his protestations, we bought him a case of beer and paid him for the slave, and we were off again. After that it was just a typical drive in a cruiser. Clunks, rattles, occasional death wobbles (made more fun by the absurd 12" steering wheel , unbalanced YokoOno snow tires and dead steering stablilizer), all with the bizarre difference of being actually able to accelerate up hills....12ht's do ok on the highway.

So I've spent the last couple mornings doing clean up , and hosing everything down with homebrew creepy oil.

Step 1 was get rid of this FAWKING steering wheel.

and, replace it with a good ol' 40 series bus wheel. Note the dodgy wiring and gaping maw where the stereo should go.

2014-08-25 10.57.41.webp

I threw on a new Emu steering stabilizer, and tightened up the steering links that can be tightened. Between that and some new wheels , it should take care of the wobbles.

This is the truck. Yes, I will get rid of the front porch at some point.

It has the PTO box still, but no winch or shaft to the winch. Probably fine with that. pto winches are kinda sketchy anyways. I'll have to think of something cool to do with the pto box tho. Maybe drive a compressor with it or something.

These assholes like it so far.

Little busier than a bj60's lump hole.
2014-08-25 10.57.31.webp

So yeah. Still needs tires, and quite possibly a rear third as the flange was loose and that generally means pooched bearing. LSD sounds and feels like a lockrite. meh.
