So, on Saturday April 18, 2015, I follow my wife into the local Lexus dealership to drop her ES-350, Ruby, off for her normal service. I had been looking at a LX-450 earlier in the morning on the local Craigslist for my soon to be 16 year old daughter. Having had previously owned a '95 80-series Land Cruiser, which my second son now owns, I knew that a high mileage 80 would be a solid platform for my girls to drive while in high school, but the $10,500 price tag seemed a bit steep, so I sauntered down to look at the '08 FJ Cruiser to see the price point on it. It happened to be over $15k, which was WAY out of my price point for my girls. As I started back, my wife who had yet to go into the dealership to let them know that her ES was there, had made her way to a 2010 LX-570.

Now, my wife LOVES her ES and we had been talking about the idea of picking up a used 200 Series LC for me, once we had completely paid for hers. We still owe about 8 more payments on that one and I have been paying above the minimum payments for a while. By the time I got back to her, she had the LX opened up and was figuring out all of the "toys", which this one seemed to have no lack of.

As I stated earlier, the truck is a 2010, with 64K on the odometer. The truck has never been off road and has new tires that were put on in December. This is a Lexus Certified Used car, for the sake of stating it. The dealership had marked this one down.... to... $43K.

NOW, we were talking... This was the price point that I was thinking about when looking for used 200s, but had not seen any here locally. All of the used ones were usually still at the $65K mark, which was WAY more than I wanted to pay. We took it for a drive and I came back and finished the paperwork. The attached pictures show how it looks in my driveway, alongside my 2002 100 Series.

My 100 is great and there is no real problems with it, the 200 will just make it that much easier to haul our travel trailer, which is about 5300lbs fully loaded. Elsie will end up serving the girls through high school and may become either my oldest daughter's first car, or my dedicated off road truck.

Here is what I have planned for the LX:
1. New wheels and tires (after these tires wear down). I am thinking 18" rims. If I can find any LC or Tundra wheels, I will use those.
2. Sliders. I am still thinking that this WILL get off road while I have it (by bloody god!)
3. Brake Controller - This has to happen within the next month so I can use it for its purchased purpose - hauling the trailer!
4. Adjust the AHC to make the Normal mode ride a little higher for larger AT tires. I will be reading on this one.
5. Possible replacement of roof rack to allow for roof-top tent, if the daughter takes Elsie.
6. Enjoy the heck out of it. I have been amazed at what Elsie had done while she was completely stock, I expect to see similar results with this one.
7. Name it. Not sure on this one yet... stay tuned.

Congrats.

There are no commercially available sliders for the LX, and there may never be, due to the AHC lines getting in the way.

Wheels are fine, just put some 275/55/20 BFG AT/KO2's on when you need new tires. No sliders but if you must go off road over rocks just place the suspension in high mode. Congrats

Thanks guys.

I am thinking black rims would look nice with the grey. As for the sliders, we will see. I have a local fabricator that I am thinking that I will work with. I have not had the chance to get underneath yet, but if I do not keep the LC, then it is likely that this LX may get a LC suspension which will eliminate the AHC to make it meet all of my needs.

sweet ride, black wheels with the grey will look sweet!!! congrats!

Congrats on the new ride. We bought a silver 2010 LX last year and love it. I don't think I would go with 18" rims on THAT truck but If you do, maybe you can pick up a set of used LX470 rims.

We recently upgraded to 2013 LX wheels and it really "renewed" the whole look of the truck.

BTW: You can fit 275-55-20 or 305-50-20 tires if you want a little extra sidewall.

Mtnracer - Just curious, but why would you not go to an 18" rim? For me, the 20s are a bit much and I do want a bit more sidewall, but not necessarily more tire width. I like the 285 size, but I was thinking of going with the 275/70-18 on the Goodyear Duratracs, which is the same that I run on my 100.

When you do your research look at posts by 4x4 tripping he did a trans Africa trip in his AHC/AVS equipped 200 series. I think you will see with some research that this system on the 200 series is far superior to the 100 series system. I would stay with this system unless you plan on rock crawling then do a big lift and armour. The steps on the LX are part of the body trim. Can't really add rock sliders without making your ride look strange. Do some erase rch and I think you will be able to get to where you want to be without a lot of mod's.

If I felt a real "need" to have the extra sidewall because I planned on taking it off road a lot then I would probably switch to 18s but the LX is beautiful with the 20s and there are plenty of AT tire tires in 275-55-20. Really just personal preference.

But like I said, if I were to get 18s I would try to find a set from an LX470.

Thanks for the info SWUtah. I am planning on doing a bunch of reading over the next... well, let's just say, that I am re-engaging into the MUD.

mtnracer - Thank you for the perspective, I do appreciate it. I don't do hard off-roading, but I would like to see if I can get a 33" in there because I really like the looks and functionality of the 18" rim, with the Duratracs I stated above. I love that look a lot and I'm hoping to incorporate it into the LX. With that said, it will be a while before I do anything outside of adding my brake controller for the trailer.

Thanks again guys!

If you want 33s on the 20" rims you can go with 275-60R20. Lots of tire options, more sidewall and it will fit the LX without modifying the suspension.

BTW: Did you know the LX has an "extra high" suspension mode when in low range. From the Lexus description:

"The LX 570’s standard hydraulic four-wheel Active Height Control (X-AHC) and Adaptive Variable-air Suspension (AVS) allow the driver to raise the vehicle by up to about three inches to help clear rough off-road terrain and to lower it for easy entry and exit. A height-control switch and light indicate current suspension height, and the light flashes when height changes occur. For off-road travel, switching to High increases the angles of approach and departure by several degrees to help the vehicle negotiate obstacles. The LX 570 will go into Extra High mode if it is in low range and traveling over rough terrain, with the height rising automatically by 1.2 inches at the front and approximately 1.8 inches in the rear. If set in High mode, the suspension will automatically lower when the LX 570 exceeds 18.6 mph, which is a more than adequate speed for rigorous off-road conditions."

I did not know it would do that... How cool is THAT! Sweet!:bounce:

Congrats on the new Ride !!!

Not 100% sure but i read of a hack somewhere that can lock the rig in high mode. I've actually seen the opposite with the suspension lowered. Don't know if it's as simple as pulling a fuse out when it's at the height you want or there's more to it
