That's pretty much my take on things. If I am where it lives, I am the invader and I avoid and go on. If it is where I live, it's open season.

And, as an update on the dogs, one is doing fine (the one that was struck second and in the eye). The other I had to put down today. The venom causes the blood not to coagulate (sp?) and she was bleeding out. She was a 15 year old 12 poudn dog, so she didn't have much to fight with. We'll miss her.

:frown: very sorry to hear that

Thanks y'all. I mostly wanted to post this up to vent. But also so that people are thinking about the critters that live around us that we might not think of from day to day (unless you are D'Animal and you live with critters around you all the time).

The IG is doing OK, but has to go to the doggy opthamologist today. Her eye is looking nasty and will probably have to be removed.

And for the great snake debate, here is a cool pic I took of a water moc (aka cottonmouth) while I was out doing some wetland surveys. Note the white mouth (thus the name).

Yup,

Typical warning posture too.

Glad you know your snakes, many folks don't have a clue.

Hope all works out well for your IG.

God Bless ya'll honey. Sorry to hear about your loss. As a natural deterrent to poisonous
snakes at our place I try to keep King snakes around. If I see one nearby I pick it up
and bring it home. Wood pile and the basement are where I usually let these snakes loose.
Shotgun takes care of the bad ones wandering on our place that the Kings haven't gotten.
Again, God Bless ya'll.

thats on of those... If red touches black, it's OK, Jack. If red touches yellow, you're a dead fellow snakes, right? What is it's poisonous kin? I forget.

You don't want to get bitten by a coral snake any time soon, since no one makes anti-venom any more.

FDA/CBER - Information About the North American Coral Snake Antivenin (Micruris fulvius)

Yup - Coral snake. I picked one up in 2000 or 2001. My dumbass picked it up (carefully) and then said "oooooo s***e..." when I got my colors straight. I relocated it about 100 feet away from the area where I found it which was very near a well used boardwalk so someone else wouldn't run across it.

I leave the Corals and their similar Kings alone. Locally we see mainly the all black or black and
white King snakes. It good to know the difference between a Niger King and a Black Racer too.
Those Racers will flat out bite the crap out of you even though it's not poisonous.

Thanks Gundy, I appreciate it.

Dog update, Pixie will NOT lose her eye! The opthamologist expects a full recovery (and that only cost me $187 to find out).

And for fun, here's a pic of a coral snake on another job site:

I was chased by a cottonmouth on a survey one day just like the one you posted Heather. Cottonmouths (Water moccasins) can come in a few different colorations too. The one that chased me was over 4' long. I had never seen one that big before. Good to hear that the IG should make a full recovery

I grew up around a ton of cottonmouths. As a young boy in a John Boat fishing on a lake (once) covered with willows I saw them all over the place - especially when I pushed my boat off the shore - they loved to slide underneath it. I swear most of the cottonmouths I ran across had a horrible tooth ache. They always seemed to be in a bad mood and would strike at you for s*&ts and giggles.

I often would push my boat off the shore with the anchor on shore and about 20 feet of slack line - wait for the cottonmouth to appear under my boat - and then 'take care of business' with a 410.

Heather - I'm glad to hear your doggie won't lose her eye!

Might check with your vet and see if there is anyone in your area that will snake train dogs, good investment.

Sorry to hear about your pooch..

So sorry to hear about your dogs. we lost an Aussie Shepherd to a rattlesnake last year. I didn't find the snake until a couple of days later, when it was curled up in the yard with about 5 cats around it, staring at it! A shotgun took care of it, it was about 5-6' long. Not as many here in OK as we had in North Texas though. My take on snakes is similar, although I will kill any cottonmouth anywhere I can since they are so aggressive and prolific. If you live in the country and can do so, pigs are great snake eradicators: they eat them and are resistant to venom. I had a bad cottonmouth problem at an old farm I leased up in Mississippi; My neighbor loaned me a big Hamshire pig that I turned loose in my fenced yard and he wasted a lot of snakes

good luck

sorry about your dog loss Heather. It's like losing a kid.
