Just got back from a 1,200 mile journey to Montreal with news that my leave to HIH9 has finally been approved. Time to get to work!

Lake Como as seen from the top of Hurricane yesterday (saddle between Hurricane and California at the top of Poughkeepsie Gulch).Glad we aren't doing the Polar Plunge today! Hurricane is cleared to the top from Silverton and California is cleared to the top from Animas Forks. They are working on clearing the connection via Lake Como this weekend. Things are picking up pace quickly. I'm amazed how much they do up there to get these passes ready for people to enjoy.
I know we did the SupportSilverton stickers and a bonus raffle ticket last year with proceeds that went to the community. @paflytyer @bluecruiser ...I think we should do it again this year (extra raffle ticket). As bad as the fires impacted them last year, they have faced a few cancellations from good size events already this year that felt they weren't going to be able to have the snow or slides cleared in time. It will be another hard year for the business owners and community of Silverton. They are putting in overtime clearing the passes of snow and removing all the felled trees from the various avalanches/slides.
For the attendees, make sure to bring some extra spending cash to spend in the town and support the local economy which is so incredibly tourist $$ dependent. I always buy tons of souvenirs and trinkets (even though I don't need them).

@paflytyer and I are definitely always in communication with the town and have plans, once again, to enable HIH attendees to help us support the town in whatever way they need. Thanks for photos. Very cool!
And as we always recommend and prefer, buy stuff you need, as much as possible, in Silverton. Great town, great people and they appreciate the HIH event and the loyalty that we have had to Silverton over the past few years.

Maybe a dumb question but are the fish really just chilling down there? Does the lake not freeze up in the dead of winter?

They are deep enough that there is liquid at the bottom for the fishes to hangout. Ice freezes at the surface and works it's way down

Little help from down south!
Birds. They carry fish eggs from one body of water to the next. Not on purpose of course, but they get them on their feet, etc, in one lake then fly to the next and boom...new fish in the second lake.
Thats gonna be some cold noodling!
The fish in most alpine lakes in CO are/were stocked and established as of late by man - receiving boosters every few years by DOW via aircraft, pack animal or backpacks.
Some of the more popular fisheries (or fisheries prone to cold shock/ non-native specie takeover) are stocked every few years via pump truck. Many of our rivers have hatcheries as well that pump truck or just pump from the hatchery into the river - a point of contention locally and the arguments on both sides are interesting to hear.
Certain hardier species were introduced in the mining days after local rivers and lakes native species were fished almost to eradication by the miners or killed off by dumping toxic mine tailings into waterways. Many rivers and creeks get assistance every few years due to fishing pressure, damming, erosion caused by fires, changes to habitat, pollution, flooding, etc.
Birds are truly the only plausible explanation for the original dispersal of fish into water anywhere, but evidence to prove the theory with certainty has yet to be produced. These days, man is doing the management and heavy lifting out here.

Tony is a good dude. I’ve known him personally for a handful of years and he ALWAYS lets me know that anything he can do to help out the HIH event, he’s up for. He knows all Land Cruisers very well and even better he’s a cool guy. He even has a surprise for us for this year’s raffle that pretty much every LC guy needs or will need. Tony was extremely generous!!
Hopefully, he’ll stop by and say hi this year! (FYI, I also bought my 80 from him about 5-6 years ago)
