So we know the advantages of having 6 speeds vs 4.. What are the drawbacks? weaker transmission? Newer design making maintenance/rebuild much more expensive? Much more difficult/expensive to tune? Also, can tuning make any transmission work with any engine? I've got my mind set on an Aluminum block vortec like the L33, but AFAIK it never came with a 6-speed.. I assume making this work would be up to the tuner? I do know there are differences in vss formats and PWM/TC lockup, etc..

Gen 3 24x (1999-2006) GM engines cannot run the 6l80/6l90e autos. You need a Gen 4/5 (2007-current) 58x motor if you want a 6spd or 8spd ;).

Has anyone managed to get cylinder deactivation working on a swap since we are talking about more modern engines?

Love 80's but damn are they slow. Should be a fun truck when you guys are done with it. Out of curiosity is it doable to put a Toyota V8 in these like a 4.7 or 4.3? I obviously know the LS would kick its ass but I was just wondering.

4.3L would be a waste of time. 4.7L is doable and has been done though doesn't seem to be very popular. Think we can all guess a few reasons why.

Is doable, has been done. The 1UZ actually came with an A343F transmission (same as 95-97 '80) so that part of the swap at least is very easy.

IIRC Slee will do the conversion for you, but it is anything but inexpensive.

They're are solutions for 6L80 as stand alone, it just costs more.

Yes there are but its not worth the $$$ imho

Best thing I ever did to an auto was put a shift kit in it. The truck no longer "coasted" rather it would engine brake very nicely when you let off the throttle. I am sold on these types of shift kits, hope to push my buddy to do one too.

Cheers

Yes - I ran EFI Live and deactivated it on all the swaps... Hate the sound when dropping cylinders ... So yes, you can activate and deactivate it in the tune.

no....cylinder deactivation does not positively help with mpg...likely the opposite. I hate the cylinder deactivation biz...rather just have a straight up mechanical engine... V8 all the way.

Well, x2 more gears in the trans should help. That is why we are after a 6spd.

So the guy with the 97 backed out on us at the last minute. But my buddy is flying into SoCal this weekend to pick up a 96 LX so the project is still on!

Cheers

What vehicle was the 1uz mated to a A343f? That would make for a really easy swap.

98-02 land cruisers, IIRC. 03+ was A750F

Most likely you'd need a 1UZ-A343F bellhousing.. when I bought a new OEM unit for my 1KZ-R151F it was about $400

Edit: OUCH. Cursory part number search shows roughly $675 from a decent discount online source. IF it's still available.

98-02 land cruiser have a 2uz.

The devil is in the details.. as much as I know about the transmission options I didn't know that difference. Thanks.

Edit:
@4xFletch 93 SC400s came with an A340E.. It appears the bellhousings are interchangeable between A340 and A343, and the control systems would be the same.. so it seems you could get a 1UZ from a mid-90s lexus with the A340 and run the A343F behind it.

Either way.. we are way off topic.

Alrighty, this is now happening. My buddy ended up with a real nice SoCal 96 LX already fitted with Slee bumpers and sliders plus a small lift. 260,000 on it. Tomorrow he is buying a 2013 Escalade 6.2L with the 6L80e. Looks like first week in November we are tearing into it and getting the powertrain all mounted up in the LX. After this it will get trailered to Boise for exhaust, wiring and driveline work.

Cheers

And here is a pic of the LX we are starting with. My buddy had it up here at my place last winter and we went through the entire front axle.
